Ranked #16 of 107 Restaurants in St Austell
Price range: $12 - $29
Dining options: Reservations
Description: The Waterwheel Inn was built in the late 1700s. It is steeped in the industrial history of Cornwall as it was once a tin smelting house and then involved in clay drying. It is set in a beautiful wooded valley next to St Austell's White River and just 10 minutes walk from the town. The restaurant has been recently refurbished and is elegant but informal with exposed granite walls, oak floor and a log fire for cold winter evenings. We serve unpretentious, plentiful, freshly prepared meals including a 2 and 3 course menu for £13.95/£15.95, main meals from £9.50 and an a la carte menu with fresh local fish and seafood specials, plus extra mature chargrilled steaks.

We only wanted to turn the car round but thought we may as well take a look. Glad we did it was the nicest meal we have had in 10 days in Cornwall served in a very clean and stylish restaurant. They have accommodation as well so will have to come back and stay. The prices are right as well.

We spent a long weekend at the Waterwheel with friends. Rooms where very clean. Choice of breakfast excellent. Outside area work still in progress but already quite spectacular. An ideal situation for visiting that part of Cornwall. Would certainly recommend this place .

We were looking for somewhere to eat in the evening, and pulled in because it looked nice from the outside. However, when I went in to enquire as to whether they were serving food and whether our dogs would be welcome, the chap behind the bar was pretty dismissive, saying that dogs were only allowed in the bar area, and... I am really sorry that we were unable to accommodate you and your dogs. Dogs are not allowed in the restaurant but we are usually happy to accommodate them and their owners either in the bar or the conservatory which has access to the garden. Unfortunately you must have caught us on a very busy night when we were full... More

Superb food and the best value ever 3 courses for £16.00 on the set menu. Very modern comfortable restaurant and bar and the owners were very hospitable. We would definitely have visited again to sample more of the delicious food if we had more time.

I remember this Restaurant from many years ago when it was Trethowel House in its heyday having a good name and meals then being sold on to numerous new owners when it was a disaster. We came here tonight to go down memory lane and what a pleasant surprise it was. The owner / barmaid / waitress ( sorry forgot... More

There was plenty of choice at reasonable prices and the restaurant is modern and comfortable. There is a lovely outside space and small lounge where you can enjoy a pre or post dinner drink

The waterwheel was only a short walk from where we were staying but we didn't eat here until our last night, which was a shame as we would like to have returned. We had a warm welcome from both the resident dog and the owners. We were invited to take a look around the gardens which are currently being renovated.... More
