No sooner had we settled in our hotel room in rainy Cardondale did we venture up the road to eat a late lunch nearby at the highly recommended Pinky's Family restaurant. We got there about 30 minutes before closing, sat at a booth, and spoke...with a friendly server about lunch options. I selected a bowl of homemade Italian Wedding Soup. Priced low, it was a pretty good value even though both my wife and I considered it two or three times as salty as it should have been. Both of us ordered sandwiches, mine a Reuben, and while it was decent from the perspective of traditional diner grill productions, it was the first time in my life that I had ever been served a barebones Reuben sandwich on a plate with absolutely no accompaniments. There wasn’t even a pickle. Pinky's had the allure of an older diner, with friendly locals chatting at the counter, some on stools, with paper placemats showcasing local advertisements, including $30K incentives for surrogate parents. In the end, Cherry Wonderdog didn’t feel the sandwiches carried the same degree of price-performance as the salty soup, so the resulting grade was an average three stars. It was like eating at a diner. Fast, easy, reliably mediocre, and proud establishment with strong roots that was definitely worth a visit.More
