Used to live in PDX but moved 7 years ago. Got back on vacation and hit Esparza's before I left on the big ol' plane. Great Longhorn but the they closed a few weeks later after the summer of 13'. Dang.

After 24 years Esparza is now closed permanently. We will miss the unique decor and Tex Mex menu. The restaurant rich Kerns neighborhood has lost a jewel.

Pinto beans were excellent, rice not so much. Turkey enchiladas were good per my wife, I didn't care for the sauce. My Pozole was good, but spicy, the corn tortillas were apparently made in house and were very good. Ate there some 10 years ago and had forgotten about it until we walked in this time and remembered the interior.... More

For many years, my regular habit after coming home from an overseas trip is to eat lunch at Esparza's. Probably because I almost never have decent Mexican food where I travel. The menu is strong on BBQ-infused Mexican specialities. The heat in the sauces could be stronger though. I had the smoked brisket burrito lunch special, washed down with a... More

Very unusual decor with Marionett Puppets hanging from the ceiling and various lizards on th shelves . Varied menu from ostrich to pork, beef and fish certainly not for the vegetarian. The lunch portion was large and included a small salad with thousand islands dressing. The service was fast and friendly. The food was very tasty. I will visit Esparza's again.

My recollection was that the food was quite greasy and with an over abundance of cilantro. Things change though and so maybe I'll give them another shot when I go across the river:)

We like the chili relleno's here, but they have terrible margarita's. In our book, there is NO excuse for a bad margarita!!! Really nice people though.. and the same staff has been there for years which we like and respect.

One of may favorite places in Portland when the ol' Tex-Mex alarm goes off!! The menu takes standard tex-mex offerings (tamales, burritos, tacos, etc) and kicks things up a notch! Using BBQ pulled pork, beef brisket and wild boar in several different dishes along with smoked top sirloin and lamb, spicy ground buffalo and catfish, and you have a recipe... More

It may have undergone some changes over the years and not everything on the menu is as before but you can still find great dishes and wish you had room for more. The smoked meats are tops.

Esparza's is the best Tex Mex outside of Texas. I'm from Dallas just like Joe, the owner of Esparza's. He got his recipes from his Mom and I can vouch that they are authentic Tex-Mex. If it's too filling or too spicy or too cheesy then you shouldn't even be in the restaurant. Go somewhere you can get the bland... More
