Superb, fresh, hip not hype

The culinary highlight of a quick NW trip. Will definitely return when in that part of the world again. A smart wine list & service that makes it happen without getting in the way, a good idea as the dishes are the main feature. This is a great restaurant with an ever-changing menu that reflects the seasonality of the region and the chefs creativity. This season includes an heirloom tomato salad and prawn salad that are beyond compare. The crispy pigs ear is another great addition. The usual favorites, like the grilled octopus, are a stand by favorite. Small plates, intended to be shared.... More

Nestled in an architecturally diverting series of rooms on trendy Alberta Street, the Aviary serves an interesting combo of dishes, with bold flavors and ingredients. Our party shared happily. That said, it is not a good scene for one of us with multiple food allergies (allotted to largely bread and water for her). Also, the servers seemed to lose interest... More

First time at this restaurant, and what a surprise--it was like French-Asian fusion and the server was extremely patient and informative on the ingredients and was also able to recommend wine/beer. Some of the best service we have received---and the mashed potatoes were sublime--I had some for dessert, they were that good!

Visited this restaurant on a saturday night with my wife while visiting portland. We had a reservation but didn't really need it as the restaurant was not busy at the time we visited. Restaurant featured an amazing menu with all sorts of delicious things we wanted to try. We started off with a Beet salad and a Shrimp Cucumber salad... More

If you are just a little adventurous, if you rate effort over trendy, if you are not looking for Meat and potatoes with green beans try my favorite place that being Aviary. I have been there countless times (at least 15) and never have left without being completely satisfied. Now, have there been surprises? Good ones. My latest trip was... More

Quite far from Downtown Portland, but worth the trip; Alberta neighborhood has many interesting shops and cafes. Located in a new building, a bit off the street front, the interior and furnishings are simple and modern. The food is outstanding, considering a kitchen staff of only three! Every dish was perfect, correctly cooked and the cuisine is a creative fusion... More

"What kind of restaurant is it?" was the question I was asked by friends before we went. Well, that's hard to say, even after a wonderful meal there with my family. Foie gras hum bao, beet and asparagus salad, crispy pigs ear, all were an amazing collection of textures, tastes and spicing. They prefer family-style sharing (although they don't seem... More

A very trendy restaurant in the new upcoming area of Alberta. We got late dinner reservations and went there as a foursome. Overall the food was delicious, service was good but no changes from anything on the menu, fair enough from the chef, but leaving a hot sauce off something due to a customers request is not going to ruin... My food was good but not great. My salmon was a little burned on the skin and the dungeness crab chawanmushi with bone marrow, sea urchin, asian pear, snap peas and truffle vinaigrette was one of the most inventive dished I have ever tried. The food is inventive and playful. Small portions but very high quality ingredients and preparation. Service... More
