Started with house rolls --- several slices of a fresh, moist dark bread and pretzel roll. Moved on to fois gras bouchon. Fabulous! Three slices about the size of a silver dollar served with toast point, quince paste and lightly pickled sweet cabbage. Shared the charcuterie plate --- two kinds of sausages, several slices of pork tenderloin, some port belly... More

Went on a Saturday evening with a reservation. Arrived early, sat promptly. Long bench seating not our preference but tables a decently separated. We checked out the wine list before hand and there is only one white and one red at $40, the remainder all higher. We chose to bring our own and pay the $20 corkage. For starter we... More

My wife and I visit Gruner every time we are in town, The food and service has always been exceptional. My wife and I were there for Valentines Day and there was a mistake and i was given the wrong entree. The restaurant was sold out, very busy. I understand that mistakes are sometimes made in these circumstances. They actually... More

I ventured in without a reservation but with a dear friend in tow. The hostess was lovely and we greatly enjoyed the food/drinks and the atmosphere here.

Having just returned from a Rhine River cruise, we were pleased to have our Portland kids suggest dinner at Gruner. We were not disappointed. Five of us were seated promptly and service was professional and helpful from there. Our server was very helpful in navigating the mostly German/Austrian wine menu; our family sommelier had a lengthy chat with the Gruner... More

Wonderful buzz and a memorable evening at this restaurant full of uncommon offerings. Eclectic wine list (adventure seekers only - nothing mainstream here), dark beer, and a menu heavy in sausages and game - all offered and prepared in an approachable but top class fashion. Lots of fun but don't bring your friend who requires traditional comfort food. Excellent staff.

Our cousins who live in Portland took us here to eat. The food is eclectic, the noise level was low so that we could all hear each other, the service was attentive, and the decor and lighting made it easy to see each other and read the menu, something we seem to find less and less. And the Gruner salad... More

We stopped by for happy hour while we were doing the tourist thing downtown. We ordered only two drinks and one happy hour appetizer, all of which were fine. However we were really pleasantly surprised with the service. Because of the restaurant's reputation we expected service to be a bit snobbish or standoffish. Everyone was so polite and friendly and... More

We love German food, and had heard such great things about this restaurant, that we went in ready to love it. But, the food was only O.K.; the service wasn't very good (we never really did know who our wait person was supposed to be). The staff didn't seem that interested in us. There were 8 of us so we...
