Description: Departure Restaurant is located atop the Nines Hotel and offers modern Asian cuisine in a sleek, cosmopolitan setting with two outdoor decks and stunning views of the city, mountains and river. Chef de Cuisine Gregory Gourdet creates traditional Asian preparations with Northwest ingredients in signature dishes such as the restaurant’s grilled kushiyaki selections, Indonesian spiced chicken and maguro karai honey sushi rolls. Departure’s bar showcases exotic cocktails, a global wine list and the city’s largest sake list. The saké and shochu list is one of the largest in the city and represents many hand-crafted, artisan producers. Departure boasts the design skills of Jeff Kovel of Skylab Architecture, one of Portland’s leading architectural firms. The overall design of the 9,000 square-foot space added a new full-level 15th floor to the original 1908 Meier & Frank building and two new rooftop patios with views overlooking downtown Portland, the Willamette River, Mt .Hood and Mount St. Helens. The design elements play off the notion of an urban escape.

Food was varied and of a Tapas sort (shared around the table), and tended towards more high end items, such as sushi, hanger steak, etc. Unfortunately, when I ordered the Curry Noodles, I wasn't expecting a soup...and stained a white shirt with bright orange curry sauce. For an 'upscale' dining establishment, where the majority of diners were dressed up in... More

Nordi, I'm sorry to hear about the white shirt. We'd be glad to cover your dry cleaning expenses for the shirt if you incurred any. I will be sure to reiterate to the staff the importance of explaining the dish as a soup. Ray Stencel 503.802.5372 More

This is a trendy, upscale restaurant and lounge chock full of small plates of deliciousness! The rooftop lounge plays great music, serves delicious drinks and has a view worth seeing. The restaurant's menu is a departure from the norm offering small plates, tapas-style delectables ranging from sushi, sashimi and a smorgasbord of dim sum offerings. We enjoyed several items including... More

The view is beautiful. We had a lovely dinner on a packed 4th. We had made reservations for the main restaurant and thought the "first come, first serve" would apply to the patio portion. It did not. The outdoor setting is completely different. The food was okay Asian tapas/sharing. Again, you come here for the view and the atmosphere, but... More

JoshuaMF, I'm glad you enjoyed your experience. I am a bit uncertain as to the "first come, first served" mention in your review. Our policy is that regardless of reservation inside, any desire to sit outside is on a wait list basis. I apologize if this was unclear in the reservation process, or if you felt like this did not... Great sunset dinner on the rooftop of the Nines at the Departure Lounge. The views are awesome, the food and drinks were good. The menu is small plates w/ an asian influence. The servers were knowledgable and friendly and our food arrived quickly. Most of the dishes the four of us ordered were very good but a couple of dishes... More

Looks like you're wAlking onto an airplane as you enter.....weird set up. They have outdoor patios but for the most part you can only sit outside and enjoy the incredible views if you're having dinner. We were only having drinks and an app, so we opted to sit at the bar and people watch. Everything from hot young twenty year... More

The view is amazing. The sunset is unreal. I'm sure the drinks & food are fine, but I was really just focused on enjoying a nightcap before heading off to the airport for our red-eye home. It was the perfect lasting memory of our time in Portland!

If you like Asian fusion, good wine, saki, great service and a view of Portland and surrounding mountains, Departure lounge is your place! The nightclub vibe is cool and the drinks are great with comfortable places to sit inside or outside and join the rare sunny, warm days in downtown Portland. I had only previously visited Departure on the weekend, in the late evening. At that time, it's typically crowded and a great social scene. Yesterday I met a friend for happy hour in the restaurant, and I was impressed. The servers and staff were friendly, and attentive. We received our drinks quickly. We both ordered wine, and the portions were... More

Enjoyed cocktails and dinner here on a very sunny evening. Very cool rooftop location. Asian tapas menu was really good. Food delicious and drinks were generous. The only weird thing was that the food seemed to come out of the kitchen one dish at a time. That meant one of our party had food, then 2 had food, then 3... More

gbscone, Thanks for the great review. Seems like you and your group had a great time. Just to be sure to clarify, our food does come out of the kitchen as ready. With the tapas style menu, the idea is to share items. Unfortunately, a result of this is person by person receiving food when items are not shared. Next... More
