Description: Departure Restaurant is located atop the Nines Hotel and offers modern Asian cuisine in a sleek, cosmopolitan setting with two outdoor decks and stunning views of the city, mountains and river. Chef de Cuisine Gregory Gourdet creates traditional Asian preparations with Northwest ingredients in signature dishes such as the restaurant’s grilled kushiyaki selections, Indonesian spiced chicken and maguro karai honey sushi rolls. Departure’s bar showcases exotic cocktails, a global wine list and the city’s largest sake list. The saké and shochu list is one of the largest in the city and represents many hand-crafted, artisan producers. Departure boasts the design skills of Jeff Kovel of Skylab Architecture, one of Portland’s leading architectural firms. The overall design of the 9,000 square-foot space added a new full-level 15th floor to the original 1908 Meier & Frank building and two new rooftop patios with views overlooking downtown Portland, the Willamette River, Mt .Hood and Mount St. Helens. The design elements play off the notion of an urban escape.

Wonderful fusion cuisine and even better service. Beautiful rooftop bar makes the entire experience complete. There was really not a bad menu item. While there might be somethings not everyone is pulled towards the execution of all the dishes is fantastic

Convenient; loved the food (we let our waiter make the selections and they were excellent); service was prompt and friendly without being intrusive

WOW. I am vegan and this place ROCKS. I mean, this is the place I dream about. Chili Lime Brussel Sprouts,Vegan Bibimbap, interesting, creative and flavorful sushi rolls, BBQ Tempeh Buns with fresh ginger and cilantro ... Every bite is flavor to the MAX. The chef is inventive and a genius. I would drive 2.5 hrs to Portland just to... More

We had a very pleasant dinner here. The food is excellent and the ambiance is pretty good. Service was average. What I enjoyed most was how they have "fused" various Asian and a few non-Asian factors into their selection. I very much enjoyed the food, what there was of it, but the portions, although advertised as "family sized to be... More

Rowland45, Thanks for the feedback. We're sorry if you were led to believe that items were family-sized to be shared. We intend our messaging to be small plates meant to be shared, tapas style. This certainly would play the part in the perceived value received and for that, we apologize. I will be sure to look into our SEO to... More

While a bit noisy (but that's the feel they restaurant was trying to achieve) Departures has a very eclectic and interesting menu. Focus on the sushi which was the best. The dim sum was disappointing...an interpretation that didn't quite work. The service was so good it was borderline intrusive but very well intentioned. Definitely go back as there's a lot... More

Superb meal. Not crazy about the decor; just me, I suppose. Too heavy on the 'Dr. Who' set, perhaps. That said, the menu took a bit to 'digest', but the food we ate was superb. An example was the brussel sprouts. Now, how can this be 'great'? Order it and find out. Great flavors. We were not disappointed with a... More

My husband and I just had a drink here, but we were very impressed. From the minute we walked off the elevator, we were in love with the place. It looks like you are just about to board Space Mountain at Disneyland. There are many different seating options, and we sat on a sleek couch, with a great view of... More

I've eaten at Departure so many times that I've lost count. One of the things I love about Departure is that they have a menu that is totally devoted to vegans. And, if you are vegan I would suggest that you order more than you think you might eat. My experience has been that my meat-eating friends almost always prefer... More

My daughter and I went to the rooftop area seating, though it was about 40 degrees out. They have nice heaters and large umbrella's that tend to keep the heat down towards the diners. We shared some sushi, had a yummy Thai chili infused vodka in my ginger'ish martini, and loved, loved, loved the sunset view. They have a 4-6pm... More

I cannot understand all reviews for this place. It has a really cool atmosphere, it's very trendy with good views, and has a neat location. That does not make the food or staff great unfortunately.
