Departure Restaurant is located atop the Nines Hotel and offers modern Asian cuisine in a sleek, cosmopolitan setting with two outdoor decks and stunning views of the city, mountains and river. Chef de Cuisine Gregory Gourdet creates traditional Asian preparations with Northwest ingredients in signature dishes such as the restaurant’s grilled kushiyaki selections, Indonesian spiced chicken and maguro karai honey sushi rolls. Departure’s bar showcases exotic cocktails, a global wine list and the city’s largest sake list. The saké and shochu list is one of the largest in the city and represents many hand-crafted, artisan producers. Departure boasts the design skills of Jeff Kovel of Skylab Architecture, one of Portland’s leading architectural firms. The overall design of the 9,000 square-foot space added a new full-level 15th floor to the original 1908 Meier & Frank building and two new rooftop patios with views overlooking downtown Portland, the Willamette River, Mt .Hood and Mount St. Helens. The design elements play off the notion of an urban escape.

Awesome view of downtown Portland- a great place to have a glass of wine after getting to know the city. It's a pretty popular place- we arrived at 4:20 (it opens at 4) and there were few seats left! So either get there right at 4 or hope to score a seat when someone gets up. The bartender was a... More

Loved the vibe in this place! View from rooftop bar is very cool and so is the atmosphere inside. Inventive menu and good service too. The food was outstanding. Highly recommend.

We enjoyed a few hours in the restaurant and then the lounge. The food was wonderful and everything the waitress recommended was perfect. The drinks and wine were also great. We will go back next time were are there.

The outside seating at sunset is the place to be. Great views, lots of people watching, delicious drinks and yummy appetizers! Of course service was excellent even when jammed at Happy Hour!

We were here on the 4th of July without a reservation but we're able to get a table outside where the views are terrific. It was an unusually hot 100 degree day and yet in the shade we were quite comfortable and the staff calm, cool and collected. The food is tapas style so easy to try many different things.... More

We've been here numerous times and will continue to go back. Love the sushi and the atmosphere is always fun. It's a bit on pricy side considering if your their just for the food you can get better for so much cheaper. If you only visit Portland once I would go here either way even just for a drink.

Departure sits atop one of downtown Portland's tallest buildings (downtown PDX does not have very tall buildings.) Nevertheless, this is a view restaurant with two great balconies, one for folks with reservations and one for those without. So many view restaurants rely on the view to please diners. Not Departure. Here, it is the food. Entering the space through some... More

If you want a Portland experience, you will be disappointed. If you want a taste of LA, you might like the scene. It's definitely a hipster atmosphere on roof deck bar. Be aware that they allow smoking out there.

Anne S, Manager at Departure Restaurant and Lounge, responded to this review

Hi! Just to clarify, we do not allow smoking in any part of the building. I do apologize if you were exposed to smoke while visiting with us. Our entire staff works diligently to maintain a smoke-free atmosphere. On those busy weekend nights it is hard to catch everyone immediately. Kind regards, Anne More
