We were heading out early on our bike trip cross country and the Little Pine (Also a great place) wasn't open yet. We stopped at the Sidewalk Cafe and had a great breakfast. The service was quick and friendly, the food was really good, and the prices were reasonable. If your in Mitchell exploring the fossil beds stop here for... More

We are bicycling cross country through small town USA. Our meals have ranged from the excellent to the not so much. This diner has limited food selections but everything we had tasted very good. The downside to this diner: the service is slow and the prices are very high for the food they're serving (we're talking $10 for a hamburger... More

We wanted to check this place since it is listed as #1 in Mitchell where we were staying while visiting John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. The restaurant does not exist anymore, since the old dilapidated building is for sale. My photo shows the For Sale sign. The place should be removed from Trip Advisor.

The biscuits and gravy (especially the gravy) are the reason to come here. Run by a local family who can tell you lots of stories about the area.

here were only two places to eat according to the folks in The Oregan Hotel. The other one is closed, so I have no choice if I want any food. Plus the only grocery in town is closed already. The opening hours is a mystery, depends on who you ask. It is a simple cafe. Very friendly service. I have... More

We stopped in Mitchell while on our way to visit the Painted Hills of John Day Fossil Beds. This little town is the closest town to the Painted Hills and there is not much here, but it is a rather quaint, historical town. We ate an early dinner at this restaurant. The restaurant has a very homey feel and the... More

The prices are a little high, but the food is very good, and the portion are very good. There is no young wait help here. Seniors are welcome here, on both sides of the counter. Come early, and rub elbows with old timers, you know, the ones with a million stories about the old west.

We stopped in on what was apparently day 4 of the government shutdown, after 5 days trekking around the SE Oregon desert. The town was roughing it- the municipal water supply was out and the tourism dollars had dried up because the main local attraction is the Painted Hills National Monument. Despite these hardships the people at this quaint little... More

Stopped in for lunch on our Painted Hills trip and ordered a burger. The burger was very good but the potato salad was the best I ever had in a restaurant - just like someone would want to make for their own family. Fountain soft drinks would have been nice, but like many small, out of the way places, the... More

I stopped in Mitchell on a motorcycle trip and saw the Sidewalk Cafe and More. It advertised homemade pies and home cooking. I had a BLT and asked for macaroni salad, but they were out. I opted for sweet potato fries instead. They were burnt and tasteless. I asked what kind of pies they had, the lady who bakes them... More
