I went for Sunday lunch with my husband and my daughter on my birthday. The service was slow from the beginning. After allocating us at the table nobody came to take our order for a long time. Waiting time for our food was also long and I didn't like what I got. First of all the meal for my daughter... More

Food venues for me need to make an impression! On my first ever visit, at a friend's suggestion, I would never go back! Had the mackerel salad - tiny squares of beetroot, a few orange segments, completely uninspiring green salad - at a cost of £14.00! The pan-fried mackerel was not well cooked and full of bones! Don't bother -... More

I was really looking forward to visiting the Bear, it gives off the image of a pleasant, comfortable gastro pub. The bar staff were fine, however, we were sat right next to the door which had a cold draft coming in while the rest of the restaurant was empty. My main course which was gnocchi can only be described as... More

I used to really look forward to visiting The Bear whilst studying at University and was excited to take my parents here for a meal. The service behind the bar was unfriendly and unhelpful. the food was nowhere near as good as it used to be. We weren't offered desserts, and being in hospitality myself, thought that was careless considering... More

Thank you The Bear for making our family celebration so fabulous! Attentive staff and delicious food as always - so glad you squeezed us all in even though you were busy. Our thanks again, we will certainly be back.

Having not visited The Bear for a few month I was pleasantly surprised to see new bar furniture, making the bar a far more welcoming place, I was just hoping that it didn't mean a change to what they do well, thankfully it wasn't! A nice menu was being served with the traditional dishes on offer but some very quirky... More

The bar staff, Anna, was miserable and rude to everyone she encountered to the point of slamming things on the bar, splashing water on customers. She should have been fired in the spot. I won't go there again.

Had been here before and knew it was quite expensive. This trip confirmed this but disappointed as it was not very good. Apart from the hand cut chips. The menu read very nicely but delivered very average food. The service was very slow considering it was not overly busy. Drinks took an age to arrive, the bottled water arrived with... More

At fave value this looks like it could be a great find. It's a Young's Establishment and has a good range of Beers/Ales. It has been refurbished and although this might be part of a Corporate Young's theme it's a bit random, as if they had three interior designers competing and they couldn't decide on whose was best. Shabby chaotic... More

The service at 'The Bear' was very hit and miss and the waiting staff seemed inexperienced and would have benefitted from some training about the menu. Several dishes on the menu were not available. Waiters were able to serve 2 rounds of drinks for everyone whilst we waited for the starter and when the food eventually came there was no... More
