Your first time here you might find us a little difficult to find as the pub is down an un-adopted lane in the bottom of a valley, backing on to the Bourne stream. "The Bat" is a traditional country/village pub retaining the charm and atmosphere of what a pub should be. An open fire, panelled walls, nooks and crannies, hops hanging from the old oak beams, cricketing memorabilia and six shining brass hand pumps for ale. Outside there is a covered patio area with grape vines overhead and a large garden with flower borders, a children’s play structure and plenty of seating. There is also a large car park.We offer a good and wholesome selection of light snacks, main meals and a mouth watering selection of homemade puddings and desserts. All our food is cooked and prepared in house by our team.Crossing the generations ,the pub is a meeting place for all and you will be sure of a genuine welcome

A gem - A pub with good food, good beer and wonderful staff

We often go here with visiting friends and family. It is within walking distance providing that our guests are prepared and are capable to walk back up the very steep dark lane. The food is very reliable and consistently good with a menu of many choices backed up by a specials board. We can... read more

Just had a pleasant evening at the Bat and Ball for my daughters birthday, overall I would say this is a good pub with great food and friendly service, my only gripe is when you have BBQ ribs on the menu please keep it simple, a nice barbecue sticky sauce, a good slaw and decent fries!! Pomegranate is too sweet... More

I've been to the Bat and Ball twice as part of a family gathering to celebrate my mother-in-law's birthday (she's lovely!). On both occassions I ordered fish for my main course, last year it was salmon and this year it was swordfish. Both dishes were tasty and the fish was nicely cooked but I did feel a bit let down... The pub itself is like you'd expect a traditional pub to be. It's small and quaint but has plenty of tables and a good sized outdoor area. The last time i had dinner here i chose a lamb burger and chips and it was sensational. It's actually the first time i'd eaten here and i have to say i would... More

Thank you for your lovely review and we are so pleased that you enjoyed your food and your time here! We do realise that the road can be an issue but unfortunately it is out of our control. The residents of Upper Bourne Lane are all attempting to collaborate and rectify the problems with the road so hopefully we shall... More

I have visited the Bat on average twice a week since Christmas but today was the first time I had been there to eat. Explanation ! I deliver to the kitchen. Everything about the place is 1st Class. Attentive and attractive staff with lots of smiles. And the food was first rate. Excuse me if I come over all Giles... More

Visit Sunday - 5 people @ 1pm, Table pre reserved. Picked this place off Tripadvisor to meet up with some old friends. We all met up and were shown to a nice table. A decent range of real ales, and friendly staff. No table service so you have to order at the bar, and a specific part of the bar... More

This is great pub and I wish I had come earlier. I would highly recommend this pub to anyone looking for a very good pub food... and not just your average fish&chips or burger but for dishes such as Pigeon Stroganoff and Duck Ragu . Clearly the kitchen enjoy good food and enjoy making good food. I'd recommend this pub... More

its quite an experience even getting there down a steep single track, but well worth it as the pub is very old and atmospheric and the garden is lovely in the summer with a large play area for children. The food is excellent and the service very good. Great ambience and somehow it always seems quiet, perhaps because it is... More

Just loved this place. It was warm, cosy and lively on a cold wintery day. It has that terrific old country pub vibe you can only get in England, but it was not touristy. Pretty much everyone seemed to be a local. A group of us had Sunday lunch and between us pretty much tried the whole menu. All the... More

I made the first mistake by parking my car at the top of the hill and taking the (steep) footpath to the pub. My colleagues followed their SatNavs and found the car park! However I needed a walk after the meal - very tasty gammon and sweet potato chips. The puddings looked very tempting - but we decided not to... More
