I love Matthew's Yard. I have spent many a long day here writing up my PhD thesis. The staff are friendly, the coffee is good and the flat breads are delicious. They also do an excellent selection of home made cakes and cookies as well as waffles, shakes and smoothies. They serve alcohol and often have music in the evenings.... More

Ive liked going there for coffee and lunch in the nice non chain coffee atmosphere but last time I went there though, the service was so slow. The guy serving forgot to tell the kitchen about my food order so after waiting 40 minutes I left getting a refund but not much of an apology. All he did was complain... More

I really wanted to like this cafe because I recently moved to Croydon and wish the place had more cafes of this type. But Matthews Yard lets itself down. A reviewer back in 2012 griped about how when you order a cup of tea you're simply given a cop of boiling water with a teabag floating in it. Yet this... More

Hi Matt, Thanks for taking the time to write a review and I am sorry that your experience fell so far short of what both you and I expected on the occasion you visited. Milk, spoons, sugar etc are all on the counter at the point of service and if not apparent should have been highlighted by the member of... More

For all you 'Cheers' fans...A refreshingly, friendly, thriving, homely place "where everybody knows your name" Lots of great music events , with an eclectic genre of music for all tastes. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed!

The biggest complaint I have ever heard about Matthews Yard is how to find it the first time. Simple directions from the town centre are to find Surrey Street, head for the pedestrian bridge which spans the street and then turn down the cobbled lane towards what looks like a church. For the local history geeks it isn't a church...it's... More

Wow!. I stumbled upon this place purely by accident as I had 20 minutes to spare before a meeting. I must have walked past this very attractive little turn off Surrey Street hundreds of times, but this was the first time I noticed the sign for this quirky café and I thought I'd give it a go. I only had... More

Found this after a long walk. What a waste of time!! Cafe almost empty tiny menu. Got our passable cappuccinos. However 30ins later no sign of the flatbread sandwiches. After a reminder The waitress said it was on its way but there other orders in front of us. . Cafe almost deserted except for three members of staff dining!!! Sandwiches... More

Nice place for coffee but not much else. Used to do a decent menu for breakfast/brunch and lunch. Now they only offer toast or cereal (at £4 a bowl...). When they did a decent menu they would often be really busy for Sunday brunch - now there's a bit of a sad and empty atmosphere at the weekend.

Hi, Thanks for taking the time to provide your feedback and sorry you left disappointed following your recent visit. Our chef has been away on long term sick, which threw our menu into disarray. Being a small independent business we could not afford to pay sick leave and recruit a replacement chef at the same time. Despite this, we have... More

A real find hidden just off Surrey Street, authentic, basic, fun, interesting, GREAT coffee and cakes and fabulous live music. I cannot believe I have never been here before, it is definitely 'alternative', but a brilliant way to enjoy an evening. Local artists have hung various bits of art on the walls, the decor is warehouse/comfy/ homey...I am looking forward... More
