Great 'after walk' treat!

A super place to park up and have a lovely walk and then finish the experience with a tea and cake extravaganza at the Ramblers' Retreat! Their cakes are delicious! In summer, the outside seating area is magical with all the visiting birds… make a point of going, because it will be worth it.

Having spent the morning walking the beautiful countryside around Alton we stopped at the Ramblers Retreat for lunch. As we had our dog with us we sat in the garden outside which I imagine is lovely in summer but was a bit damp and dank in January. We ordered a ham egg and chips and filled potato skins, plus a... A wonderful little gem of a place with great little 'huts' for weary walkers and their furry friends. Food is delicious, home-made and hot and tasty. Awesome hot chocolate drinks! Cheeseburger is amazingly tasty and the chilli is lovely. Some of their home-made cakes are delicious too! We always plan our walk around this drop in!

Good experience, Christmas decorations gave a good feel for time of year. Agree with didownward Lemon meringue very nice. Outside could have gone through a Autumn put away rather than waiting for a Spring clean. Will go again.

A great eatery with plenty of different seated locations/areas for walkers, dog owners and family meals out. Excellent walks around the area, Mill lakes. wooded haunts (Hang mans tree) follow the railway, left to Oakamoor and right to Alton station and witness the old caulden canal flow in and out of the river churnet. A hidden gem but don't tell... More

It's many years since we walked through Dimmingsdale so it was wonderful to see that the Ramblers Retreat was still going strong. What was even better was the quality of our lunch. I started with a generous portion of steak and ale pie served with homemade chips and veg and followed this with the most enormous lemon meringue (see photo)... More

We stopped for tea and cake last Sunday. It's very popular so you do have to queue to order but the staff are friendly and efficient so keep it moving. We sat out in the garden and enjoyed the beautiful autumn weather. The cake was delicious and very fresh. I saw some of the meals being served and they looked... More
