Wonderful (and unexpected) hospitality

What a find! We arrived late, too late (thanks to a motorway snarl up) for the kitchen to be open. Disappointment, but one of the bar staff took pity on weary, hungry travellers and volunteered to have a hunt round the kitchen. We booked here for Easter Sunday lunch for four adults and a toddler. As always a very pleasant experience with friendly staff. We ordered THE WORKS To eat which was a selection of three meats, stuffings balls the size of apples and plenty of veg. Never before have I looked for the smallest roast potato to put on my plate!... We stopped here for lunch on a week day and found the pub nearly full, so better book before you go! We tried the "lunch for £5" and I have never had such good food for such a ridiculously small price. There was plenty of choice. I had the fish pie - a mixture of white fish, prawns, scallops (YES!)... More

Had a lovely Sunday lunch here today. Roast beef was excellent and served with lots of veg. Friendly staff and great beer too. Will be back.

Stopped in here for lunch while sightseeing in the area. Took two tries to find the car park access. Lots of parking but it was almost full. Found a table in the corner, which might have been the last one, Pub was very full. Placed order and food arrived quickly. Ordered one of the bargain lunch options. Food was good,... More

Visited with my wife at lunchtime enjoyed two excellent lamb lasagne made with home reared lamb and included were two scrummy slices of garlic bread , served with a smile for the princely sum of £5 per head , we will return again soon .

Very disappointed arrived asked where we were sitting told upstairs, would have been nice to have been shown to table. When we booked we asked for a highchair, only to be told when we asked there were none available , this made life very awkward as there wasn't a lot of room to move with a young baby on your... We at The King Alfred are very disappointed with this review, which as readers will see is poles apart from other visitor reviews. I would like to respond to the issues raised as some are incorrect and some are distorted by the reviewer. We are a pub which serves food, and it is not our practice to show guests to... More

Seemingly out in the depths of the Somerset levels - but actually only 15 minutes from Bridgwater - the King Alfred is a nice example of a country pub. Good pub food at reasonable prices; when we were there they had a few dishes at £5 each which is great value! Plenty of space on a January Saturday but they... More
