Good pub food with added style

This is a friendly and welcoming pub a couple of villages on from the one in which I live. The staff are welcoming and friendly. We were staying in a local cottage for New Years and decided to visit the local for a few drinks and some food. The pub itself is lovely, exactly how you'd imagine a country establishment to look and feel. The owners were very friendly and welcoming and the food was excellent. I had the confit of duck and my girlfriend... More

Our first Christmas lunch here and we were not disappointed. Starters of perfectly cooked scallops in pesto cream and a wonderful Scotch egg with a difference, chopped mushroom with breadcrumbs surrounding a soft boiled egg, were delicious. We both had free range goose and turkey with orange and thyme stuffing bacon-wrapped with seasonal vegetables The turkey (a very generous portion)... More

Have eaten here on many occasions, as it was the main lunchtime venue choice of my elderly parents who were tremendously well looked after by Chris, the landlord, for a number of years. He went out of his way to welcome them and be attentive to their wants, in a completely genuine way. The meals have always been delicious on... More

Went here for a business lunch. Nice place, very friendly and attentive staff, nice owner, very pleasant and polite.. BUT .. the menu is somewhat dated and this is illustrated by the age demographic here of a lunchtime ... oap city!! If you like a full 'dinner' at lunchtime, then great. I'd prefer a more modern menu with lighter choices.... More

We spent a lovely evening at the Hand and Shears. A small family gathering, only six of us. We received a very warm welcome, the food and service was excellent. After our meal we all sat round the lovely open fire in comfy chairs - such a friendly atmosphere and so comfy we didn't want to leave.

We ate (and drank!) at this friendly pub and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. My wife had pan fried sea bass with cherry tomatoes and I partook of the pan fried cod with prawns. Both were delicious and accompanied by perfectly cooked vegetables. The bill came in at under £50 and included two glasses of Chardonnay and a pint of perfectly... More

We eat here on Sunday lunchtime, accompanied by our dog. Can't recommend this establishment enough. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. We didn't have to wait long. The service was first-class. The ambience was relaxed and friendly. 10/10 in every area.

We broke down on our way back from Blenheim Palace outside the pub and as soon as it opened the owner came outside to see if there was anything he could do. He even tried to help us find accommodation in case we were stuck over night. We sat outside enjoying the sunshine and the free snacks he bought over... More
