Good standard pub grub, with great venison

Friendly cosy pub with fires burning on chilly evenings. The beer was good and the food filling and tasty. The venison filled Yorkshire pudding was a real treat.

After a long journey, we were really looking forward to some good pub grub, but left hungry & disappointed. My wife ordered cod & chips- fish was lukewarm & chips tasted like they had been cooked in oil from last week. My gammon & chips weren't much better- again the chips tasted of old oil, the egg looked & tasted... More

Ham, eggs and chips. Ham ok, fried eggs like bullets, chips unpleasantly greasy, Wife's scampi and chips no better. With so many better places around (eg the Mizen Head or, a little further afield, the outstanding Jolly Fishermen at Craster) this is one to avoid.

Sat outside with our dog in the sunshine! Alnwick beer was nice and the not expensive prawn sandiches (£4.95!) came with a little salad, coleslaw and crisp. Lots of nice fresh prawns and crab in DH sandwich. Shared chips made for a very filling lunch! Well done Castle.

We visited the pub on Sunday after staying in one of the local hotels. Vast choice of food on menu, prices are a little expensive but you except this as you are in a tourist village. I opted for the smoked haddock fishcakes which were beautiful and my husband choose the ham & eggs he did say it was a... More

What an odd system they have here, no wonder there was a long slow queue. When my turn eventually came to be served, the lady listened to my order - pint lager shandy, small diet coke, small orange squash, two packets of crisps. She slowly wrote 'pint lager shandy' on a waiter's notepad then poured it. Back to the pad,... More

It was Easter Sunday, sunny and very, very busy, which may explain why it was only just ok. Big pub with a lovely beer garden, but small bar area meant you had to queue for some time to order drinks and food. Food arrived quickly, but was average for the price; burger was the most disappointing based on description.

A friendly welcome as soon as we walked through the door, and the hosts were eager to please, double checking how my meal was to be served and offering me additional options, not listed on the menu. We waited next to no time for our meals and when they arrived, the food was delicious! I had a trio of smoked... More
