The Duke's Head serves modern British cuisine in the heart of the quintessential Essex village. 'Village Pub & Dining' explains our concept perfectly. A warm, friendly, atmospheric pub, which happens to do excellent, locally sourced food! Along with friendly, helpful service, perfect pints and very good wine, this is somewhere that anyone would like to spend a few hours. Relaxing on our sunny patio under pretty parasols, with the children running in the garden or hiding in the quaint tree house or warming you feet in front of a roaring fire, with your dog by your side! From a welcoming early arrival prior to our booked table - changed by our request for a later start-time than our original e-booking - to the end of our meal, we were impressed by the friendliness of the youngsters behind the bar and by their attentiveness. The meal itself was for us both of high quality, high value-for-money. We would... More

We visited with some friends and were a party of 4 who had a delightful afternoon near Bishops Stortford and wanted somewhere to have dinner, but it's difficult finding somewhere that serves food on a Sunday Evening found this pub on line and booked. It's always with a little trepidation when you don't know somewhere and are responsible for choosing!... More

Eight of us had lunch - most of the food was inedible. The Imam Bayilda, a dish I have eaten many times in Turkey, was particularly bad. It did not resemble the original dish in any way!

Excellent food and service in a beautifully kept pub with lovely garden, we fancied so many of the starters so we ordered 4 to share and one main to share, the staff were lovely and could answer any questions we had about the food. We sat outside and the atmosphere was lovely

The Dukes head proves the west end is not the only place to enjoy excellent food with impeccable service. The food was extremely tasty and well presented. The staff were friendly and knowledgable when it came to advise regarding the menu. If you are near Bishops Stortford it is a must, and if you love the Beatles you can't miss... More

Nice pub atmoshphere with decent if highly priced food but the staff seem less than interested unless "pushed" for some service

We really like this pub for atmosphere and food. This visit there were a number of 'new' items on the menu, I chose the Dukes Coronation Kiev with sag aloo, sultana puree and onion bahji-the flavours really complemented one another- it was delicious! No room for pudding this time but selection looked great!

Visited after reading the web site and seeing the menu so expected good food. Sadly this was not the case. Interior and gardens very nice , staff very friendly and service good. Food however total let down cray fish salad tastes of mayo only, scotch egg was ok, crispy duck salad with noodles actually very bland, tasted of nothing ,... More

We visited the Dukes Head last night expecting a really good meal after seeing the reviews, Unfortunately this wasn't the case. I had the sea bass which was okay but nothing to write home about and the portion was extremely small, £16.25. Total rip off. My husband had the special, chicken, mushroom and bacon pie. It came up in a... More
