An essential watering hole if you ride the Test Way. With the picturesque and unusual bridal way along the old railway line, easy to see why Queen Victoria described The Sprat and Winkle journey as just like going down the Nile. Where the old Roman road crosses the river at Horsebridge sits the John of Gaunt. Up the hill you... More

Four of us stopped at this pub for a well deserved break during a cycle ride (non cyclists!) We had a few drinks and a meal. The service was excellent and so was the food. Probably some of the best chips we have ever tasted. The lasagne was also very good, and home cooked. It was just what we needed... More

On a recent walk on the old railway line from Stockbridge to Mottisfont, we stopped off at the Gaunt for lunch. Excellently kept ale and a good plate of Scampi and Chips had us on our way fully refreshed. Very friendly, however a change of management is due soon.

Went there for lunch as we couldn't park at a pub just down the road from here. Never been before but it looks quaint and as it was a sunny day we could sit outside. Girl behind the bar very sweet and helpful but seemed a bit out of her depth. She did apologise for the wait for food up... More

Called in last week for a quick sandwich for the first time in ages. Was not too impressed with my previous visit, but put that down to the people being new. Rather busy this lunch time and it seemed to be rather dis-organised. Nice pint of cold Guinness. Was served the drinks quickly enough, but waited nearly 1 hour for... More

Stopped off for lunch while walking in the Test Valley with friends. We got a warm welcome from Tracey the landlady and had a couple of the well kept real ales, (Ringwood and Palmers). The food was excellent and good value for money, could thoroughly recommend the fish and triple cooked chips which were delicious!

Called in to the "John of Gaunt" for lunch on May 30th prior to undertaking a very pleasant walk combining the "Test Way" and the "Clarendon". Lunch was delightful and excellent value for money combined with good service and a very welcoming atmosphere.

This pub is right by the river and the old Southampton to Andover Railway line now given over in part to the Test Valley walking route. The beers range was good as was the food, and they gladly accept walkers in muddy boots!

Adjacent to the Test Way, the John o Gaunt welcomes walkers and their dogs in a warm and friendly atmosphere for good pub food at very sensible prices. My wife and I visit (with the labrador) as often as we can.

A warm welcome from the friendly bar staff. We visited with our running group and were well served (even as a large group) and the beer was excellent. The food was not "posh" but just what we needed after an hours running.
