good beer

called here twice on our travels, the first time after travelling over birker fell in the ice ..........a few beers on but no cider or keg beers available until later in the week. As this was winter I suppose this was to be expected when there a few people around. People behind bar were friendly... read more

My family ate out here due to the pub being in the good pub guide. Sadly, the food was not very good at all. The service was really excellent throughout - friendly and attentive, and found toys for our toddler. However, despite the fact that we only arrived at 6pm, there were not enough steak and ale pies to go... More

Dropped in here for lunch during a walk back down from the top station on Ravenglass railway. Fantastic building set in the rural valley. Had a light lunch and a couple of beers. Friendly staff have us some useful directions to complete our walk.

Their platter was huge. We should have ordered 'children's meals'!! We travel a fair bit and have meals in random countryside pubs. They have the largest serving plates we have seen anywhere, no exaggeration! The owner, Jonathan said he'd rather people left some on their plates than go away hungry - admirable attitude, that. But we couldn't eat dessert, regretfully,... More

Stayed in the cabin and drank and ate in the pub. The cabin is compact but comfortable enough to stay in. The gas fire heats up very quickly and the shower has a good pressure to it. Lounge is comfortable enough to eat and relax in for a family of 4. The pub has 10 beers on at any time,... More

The pub is in a great location but it is a pity that the food is at best average. We visited early one evening and the pub had a few drinkers rather than diners. The welcome was ok but the bar maid was cleaning the chairs when we arrived and continued to clean around the drinkers. Odd. There was a... More

We walked up to this pub having got off the Ravenglass railway and picked a lovely spot in the garden, where there are climbing frames for kids and plenty of space. It was about 12.30 pm, and at the bar we were told they had run out of eggs so couldn't do us the only vegetarian sandwich option on the... More

DO NOT EAT AT THIS PUB the food is terrible. We were hungry and looking forward to a nice pub tea as camping nearby. The pub looks nice enough and in lovely surroundings but boy the food was awful. I ordered steak and ale pie and chips. Pie dry, no gravy, looked like a school dinner reheated 10 times in... More

We booked a table at this Pub/resaurant last Saturday 27th of September 2014. We were informed by the very nice waitress/manageress that they had no starters on that night due to the number of bookings and had 3 main courses off the menu as well. We ordered and after about 15-20 minutes were served by very polite restaurant staff, however,... More

We happened upon the George IV whilst navigating a somewhat tortuous route over the top of the fells to Ulverston. With two 80+ year- old ladies in the car, The George appeared like a little haven, where we could at least call a halt for a loo & drink stop; however, once we got out of the car, the warmth...
