Description: THE journey from Wheelock Street to Chimichangos may just be a few steps....
THE journey from Wheelock Street to Chimichangos may just be a few steps. But as soon as you walk through the door it feels like a voyage of discovery. Shades of orange and subtle lighting lend an ambience to the restaurant. Above the bar is a painted landscape filled with cacti and sombreros playfully hang from walls and chairs. It is the kind of scene you might expect from an inner-city restaurant but this is Middlewich. Chimichangos officially opened at the weekend and the Guardian was invited to give it a try. Owner Jason Tanfield has transformed Kandi’s Steakhouse into a Mexican restaurant. The 36-year-old said he identified a gap in the market as there is only a handful of independent venues in Cheshire where you can enjoy Mexican food. Jason is also drawing on his experience as he used to be the head chef at a restaurant called The Three Amigos in Exeter about 15 years ago. My partner and I were promptly seated and were struck by how attentive and polite the staff were. We were soon sipping Coronas and tucking into some tortilla chips with delicious home-made salsa. To start we had creamy garlic mushrooms in a tortilla shell and jalapenos stuffed with soft cheese which were both perfect. We followed this up with vegetable fajitas and chicken fajitas respectively - and this is where Chimichangos showed its edge over some of its competitors. Firstly you can choose how hot you want your food to be which is sure to be welcomed by both spice addicts and those who like things mild. The portions were also incredibly generous which tends to be unusual for Mexican restaurants. There genuinely was not much to criticise but it would have been nice to have some cheese with the fajitas but im told they do normally and had forgot!! The service was prompt and my partner, a vegetarian, was impressed with the range of suitable dishes. Credit also goes to Jason for making good use of the limited space available. At the time of our visit a large group for a 21st birthday celebration was being accomodated. We were defeated by the time it came to dessert but suffice to say a taste of Mexico is on offer for those with a sweet tooth. The menu even includes a banana wrapped in a tortilla and dusted with cinnamon called a chimichanga. The whole experience was fantastic and comes highly recommended.NOTE:This was a secret food critic from the guardian newspaper just search GUARDIAN NEWSPAPER MIDDLEWICH

Excellent!

We have been regularly since it opened and had another fantastic time last Friday night. We were a party of ten and all agreed it was a fantastic evening. Service was top drawer, atmosphere was brilliant and as usual food was excellent quality and great value. We all shared the nacho 'volcano' and... read more

I'll keep this short as I can see from previous posts the owner/manager cant handle criticism too well. Perhaps he should try sitting on that incredibly loud and stupid glass froster machine and chill out? The restaurant is completely different from anything around and has a great atmosphere with great service. The food however was below par and overpriced. The... More

The nachos are cooked in a dedicated pizza oven so your wrong there, the quacamole is made fresh so your wrong AGAIN and the rice is a traditional Mexican recipe that you obviously won't get when you microwave uncle bens rice. The glass froster is the only one in England and yes it's loud but it's gas and the customers... More

It's a small place so expect rush and would be better if you come in with a reservation. We were a group of 6 and were extremely lucky. Monday's are surprisingly closed and we realised it at the door on a Monday. It's a small place with a seating capacity of maybe 25-30. The staff are extremely helpful. For starters... More

Had been to Chimichanco's once before a few years ago and I recall it being good then, then after seeing a newspaper article that it has won an award for the Best Mexican Restaurant in England, I just had to try it again. Around Christmas time I liked and commented on a post that they has put on their Facebook... More

Moth visited Jan 2016 (this was an attempt to visit)! Over the past 12 months or so a friend has booked 3 or 4 times weeks in advance for a party of 8-10 of us and each time we have been unable to book, been double booked or had our booking cancelled last minute due to absurd excuses given! Can't... More

You've been unable to book because we're probably full and we only cancelled your table as the chef was on holiday so we weren't taking bookings above 4. Trip advisor is about when you have been not tried to go as we're so busy More

thanks you for your review. A few starters are vegetarian such as the mushrooms, stuffed jalapeños and we can do veggie chili tacos - maybe we will hi-light these in our next menu in March. Although most main courses (burritos enchiladas chimichangas) have the option to have vegetable chilli I presume it's not good if you don't like chilli so... More

Almost everything is great about this restaurant. The food was soooo good I'm actually drooling now. The restaurant ambience and decoration were excellent and the owner/chef is lovely! The only thing that disappointed me was the pinacolada I had. The pineaple juice they used doesn't seem fresh and it was a bit bland. Regardless, we enjoyed our meal and will... More

Thanks for your feed back. We use pineapple juice From one litre tubs, perhaps it settled or possibly not used for a day or two. Will stop using it and go onto individual bottles! Free one next time! 👍🏻 More

A small and friendly restaurant with the right amount of attention. Two small critiques at the end of this review. The food was excellent, good portion sizes and good value for money. Nobody likes to leave a restaurant hungry or skint! I had nachos and paella to start, couldn't decide so had both! The chicken chimichanga for main was the... More

Thanks your for your review. The item scribbled out was crocodile as our supplier was sourcing from Ebola ridden areas! I will inform all staff of specials too- the two... More
