Description: An award winning dining destination in the centre of beautiful old Amersham, the Artichoke restaurant has been tipped for the top by critics, chefs (including Raymond Blanc) and, rather impressively, the Michelin Guide 2011. The traditional setting of Artichoke has been given new life with a slick contemporary country makeover in which comfort and style sit side by side, colours are muted and soothing and the beautiful features of the building are allowed to shine through, a part of the carefully considered dcor. Chef and owner Laurie Gear oversees a refined modern European menu filled with charming additions including not only seasonal ingredients but foraged herbs, berries and flowers too and he and his team can be spotted hard at work in the open kitchen from the Kitchen Dining Room. Other spaces here at Artichoke include the glorious Garden Dining Room, opening out on to the bespoke herb wall and the Wine Room up on the first floor, leading in to the well stocked cellar and just right for sophisticated business dining. The perfect neighbourhood restaurant, Artichoke has certainly put Amersham on the map.

I have been to this local favourite a few times, but not for a while... I am glad to report - it's still wonderful! The things the chef does with pork and beetroot are Michelin star worthy! Love it here.

Second visit almost a year after the first. Service was generally good but on the slow side at times; surprising as the restaurant was not full (this was a midweek evening whereas last year's visit was a Saturday evening). Food overall felt slightly disappointing, though that is compared with its own high standards and it is still imaginative and well-prepared,... More

Went for lunch with family members celebrating two birthdays. Staff are certainly efficient and able to answer questions on the menu. However, all three of us were rather disappointed in the food, next time we are in Amersham we will return Gilbey's We were seated in the window and whilst at first we thought this was a nice position, we... We went on a Friday night , two couples for dinner. The quality of food and the quality of the service was excellent. I had the crab and the lamb and both were very very good. Do not miss the Armagnac soufflé. The only bad thing was that the it took them a while, to bring the main dishes. Probably... More

We had a very enjoyable Saturday night family meal and the overall experience was excellent, with attentive service and creative food. However there were just a couple of details that disrupted an otherwise great experience including our waitress asking us to move our table as other diners arrived, and the table spacing is rather tight as noted in other reviews.... 6 of us visited on a Saturday night and had the tasting menu with wine flight. We added a cheese course, bottle of Prosecco, mineral water, teas and Irish coffees. It was pretty expensive but boy did we have a super time. We were pretty noisy but luckily the restaurant was busy and loud so no harm done. The staff... More

I took my wife for a meal at The Artichoke for her birthday and we both really enjoyed it! It's been on our list of restaurants to visit for a while now and thought a birthday was a good excuse to attend. I've not been to Old Amersham before and the location is lovely, as is the restaurant interior. My... More

I've been wanting to go to The Artichoke for some time now and finally booked in with my husband one Friday evening for a treat. It was definitely worth it; the service and food were both absolutely flawless.

The Artichoke had great promise however whilst the food may have deserved such an accolade of a Michelin star (although in my humble experience I question some of the dishes) I'm afraid the comfort of the restaurant really let's this overall experience down. Most diners were couples and they were certainly packed in, the tables are far to close for... More

We went for the set menu which is good value. The bread is very good and service generally very good. Wine and drinks are very expensive and this doubled the bill so it is worth considering the added cost. Portions are small and probably explains why there is no Michelin star..yet. The food is inventive and very good. The cost... More
