An award winning dining destination in the centre of beautiful old Amersham, the Artichoke restaurant has been tipped for the top by critics, chefs (including Raymond Blanc) and, rather impressively, the Michelin Guide 2011. The traditional setting of Artichoke has been given new life with a slick contemporary country makeover in which comfort and style sit side by side, colours are muted and soothing and the beautiful features of the building are allowed to shine through, a part of the carefully considered dcor. Chef and owner Laurie Gear oversees a refined modern European menu filled with charming additions including not only seasonal ingredients but foraged herbs, berries and flowers too and he and his team can be spotted hard at work in the open kitchen from the Kitchen Dining Room. Other spaces here at Artichoke include the glorious Garden Dining Room, opening out on to the bespoke herb wall and the Wine Room up on the first floor, leading in to the well stocked cellar and just right for sophisticated business dining. The perfect neighbourhood restaurant, Artichoke has certainly put Amersham on the map.

Dined here as a group of 5 as training for my restaurant management team. we had the 7 course tasting menu without the pairing wines as we selected our own. Outstanding service, Incredible food, and an absolute pleasure. An extensive wine list to which the manager was overly knowledgeable of to an almost frightening stage. In fact the only issue... Well that was a huge disappointment: a lot of light with very little heat! This was supposed to be a birthday treat and even on reading the menu we'd already wished we'd gone elsewhere - especially given that we were prepared to spend a considerable amount on a lunch. There seemed to be a lot of intricacy on offer but... More

I guess I'll have to stop whining about how there are no good restaurants around here because we had a sublime dinner here. We had the tasting menu, with wines. This was a great way to sample what this restaurant can do. I found it every bit as inventive and delicious as The Ledbury, where I had lunch last week... More

This was a wonderful surprise for me from my children to celebrate my 70th. I didn't know where we were going or what we were eating and I was very surprised when faced with a tasting menu of 7 courses plus the wine with each course. I would highly recommend the experience at this restaurant and compliment a fantastic staff... More

We returned to the Artichoke after giving it a miss following a slightlly disappointing set-menu lunch. This time it was for dinner and a la carte. It was brilliant. We both had scallops that were as suculent and as well cooked as we had ever tasted. The accompanying vegetables and sauces were sublime. As a main course I had belly... More

The food was spectacular. Wood pigeon was a challenge to the palate but I would possibly order as my last meal. The blood orange sorbet was the only ice I now ever want. The wine was amazing and not overpriced (£42 in the restaurant vs £18 at the cheapest online seller) a far lower ratio than many restaurant apply to... More

My wife and I lunched here on her special birthday and found the place charming. The service was first rate and the food excellent. We chose from the set lunch menu which at £28 for three courses was exceptional value. Drinks were a little pricey, the cheapest large glass of red costing £13!! Overall it was a great experience and... More

Visited the Artichoke for dinner on a Saturday evening and have to say it was one the best meals we've ever had. Food is stunningly presented and delicious, plus a great choice on the menu and very accommodating for my gluten free fiancée. Particularly recommend the veal loin and pork belly - they're among the best we've ever tasted! Next... More
