Description: The Chanterelle Country Inn and Cottages is named after the golden mushroom, Cantharellus cibarius, which grows in abundance over its 100 + acres. The Chanterelle mushroom is one of the most "choice" of all wild fungi because of its fragrant flavor. Cape Breton Chanterelles are shipped all over the world to some of the most exclusive restaurants and dining rooms. When they are in season, you will find this delicacy in many of the dishes served in the dining room at the Inn. Other choice edibles are also found the the woods behind the Inn. The discovery of these choice 'shrooms was a major factor in Innkeeper Earlene Busch's decision to move from Boulder, Colorado, and build the Inn. She originally came to Cape Breton to pick up a bedroom suite of handmade curly maple furniture crafted by Bob Lambie of the Dovetail Shop near Margaree and fell in love with the area. Recognizing the healthfulness of the fresh air, pure crystalline water (we call it Chanterelle Champagne) and the serenity and pristine beauty of the North River Valley and St. Ann's Harbour, she decided to build an Inn dedicated to the values of a healthy and "green" environment. The Inn draws its water from a certified deep well fed by a natural spring, serves organic and locally grown food whenever and wherever available. The Inn building itself is modeled after a traditional Cape Breton barn---designed to look rustic on outside but welcomes guests to a rich and comfortable interior. Weathered hemlock recycled from the original barn, built in 1912, frames the commons area, the dining room and the upstairs hallways. The cottages are re-cycled, too, from a property in Ingonish that closed to make way for a maritime interpretive center. The property is dedicated to making as small a footprint as possible on the North River Valley. In addition to our use of solar space and water heating system, we serve locally produced ingredients in the restaurant, use only natural and fragrance-free cleaners and laundry soaps. Our hand and facial soaps are made exclusively for the Chanterelle Inn from natural ingredients by a local soapmaker. We use no pesticides or herbicides. And, of course, we are commited to pre-and re-cycling and ask our guests to join us in that effort. Chanterelle Inn was officially opened on June 3, 2000, largely due to the efforts of Earlene's life long friends who came up from Colorado: Anne and Bill Gillespie, Barbara and George McCulloch and Joe Kercel. Anne and Barbara designed and decorated the interior of Inn while Bill, George and Joe did whatever tasks were necessary to open the doors on time. Earlene's appreciation of their work is equaled only by her gratitude to them. We continue to strive to exceed guest expectations. Our greatest reward is having guests return year after year or when we have a guest who has been referred to us by someone who stayed with us previously. Green Weddings - The property specializes in creating memorable events and is one of the best locations on Cape Breton in which to host a small intimate wedding event and reception. Mountain vistas, personalized service, all wrapped with a focus on delivering special events with a green and sustainable touch.

'I'm afraid I can't cook you a proper meal, ma'm', Earlane said to me trying to book a table at 6 pm. That triggered us really, because we were very anxious to get a proper meal. The next evening we had a 'proper meal', and the night after, and even the night after that one. Though we had to drive... More

We stayed and dined at the inn. The food was incredible. We had one person with Celiac's and they were more than accommodating both for dinner and breakfast. I had the local Halibut and it was done to perfection. Many thanks to Keith who made our evening memorable with lots of humour, and excellent service.

My girlfriend and I were looking for a romantic country inn in Cape Breton to spend several nights while we explored the Cabot Trail. We read about the Chanterelle Inn on trip advisor. The location was perfect, and we loved that the owner, Earlene, has a passion for protecting the environment. We decided to give it a try, and we... More

A friend and I made reservations here looking for a nice Saturday night dinner. What a charming place! We were served a simple but flavourful meal focused on fresh, local ingredients. Desserts were exquisite (try the chocolate potato cake and bread pudding!). The wine list is extensive with multiple local choices. The owners were beyond welcoming and absolutely lovely. Would... I will start by saying have good directions and plenty of time before you head here. We have been pretty disappointed with the food so far in N.S. other than great seafood. What a relief to sit down and enjoy food crafted from the freshest ingredients and presented without being overly sauced. Just let the food speak for itself. As... More

Thank you for your review and for the advice you gave to visitors who choose to come to the restaurant from Baddeck. It is a picturesque drive with so many "Photo-ops" along the way. The appreciation you expressed for the local ingredients was so rewarding and I am especially glad you enjoyed the "strawberry-rhubarb fool". More

Wonderful inn but the food is the star! Best dinner we had in Nova Scotia, and we ate very well there.

Such a lovely compliment---thank you! I note that you were with us in July: such a lovely time of year when we are able to source such a wonderful variety of fruits and vegetables from the growers in the area that complement Cape Breton's seafood, meats, and wines. Too the weather was so fine that dinner was served on the... More

It took some driving, but we were happy to have decided to have dinner at the Chantrelle. The food was excellent. Unfortunately, there are not many really good restaurants on the Cabot Trail, but this is definitely an exception.

Just to clarify, this wonderful restaurant/inn is not located in Baddeck. It is about 25km away located in St. Ann's. I just wanted to point this out, as we were walking around Baddeck and searched on Trip Advisor this place came up and so we made reservations (which is a must). We continued about our day and when it came... More

"Tis true---and I know it is somewhat confusing. "Baddeck" is our mailing address. The setting for the restaurant (and the Inn itself) is about 25 minutes out of Baddeck on the Cabot Trail, overlooking St. Ann's Harbour. We are pleased you felt it was worth the extra minutes to come out and hope you return! More

The Inkeepers at the Water's Edge Inn in Baddeck told us about this restaurant which is overlooks St. Ann's Harbour. What's special about this restaurant, besides it's spectacular locvation on the Cabot Trail, is that everything they cook and cook with is sourced within 100 miles of the restaurant. A charming small inn on the top of a steep hill,... More

We stayed at the inn as well as had dinner there. It is a very quiet relaxing place. The meals both dinner and breakfast were outstanding, well above the standards of other more expensive meals we have had recently. Well worth the visit.
