Excellent choice for a special meal

We drove up the hill in Port McNeill to the Northern Lights Restaurant, part of the Haida-Way Motel, on the recommendation of our B&B and it was very good. We had been finding entree prices on the North Island higher than we were used to, but the food was beautifully prepared and plated (our... read more

This restaurant was recommended as a good place to eat in Port McNeill. We were there late in the afternoon and found the restaurant empty with lots of reserved table. The staff diverted some young males with good reason away from the restaurant. Well done! The food was well presented for McNeill with taste good.

We had a wonderful meal at this simple restaurant. Halibut beautifully cooked with crab and shrimp in bernaisse sauce, - perfection, great salads, pricey but very good quality considering the little town and motel setting. The waitress was very friendly, great service- this restaurant is a real gem.

My husband had the fried oysters and I had a salad with the coconut prawns appetizer. All the fried food was over-cooked. The oil may have been overheated or the timer broken, but the food wasn't good. We should have sent it back, but we ate most of it and left. The server was friendly but it took a long... More

I had the seafood platter, two oysters, two coconut prawns, and one piece fish, with choice of sides. Lots of food , good value. I ate in the pub, and the server was amazing. Very impressed. Going back to try something else tonight. What a nice surprise.

Among the specials offered that evening, there was a halibut à la Neptune, with a béarnaise sauce enriched with crab meat and shrimps. The fish was cooked to perfection and the fish sat on a bed of Julienne potatoes. Most pleasant, delicious and fresh... A definite repeat, though the special was a bit pricey with no soup, dessert or tea-coffee.

In Port McNeill there aren't a lot of places to eat or stay but I stumbled onto Northern Lights because I was staying across the street at the Black Bear. A delightful young lady named Shantel knew the menu inside and out. Here's an example: she told me the grilled carrots were done in honey and dill, the grilled parsnips... More

Despite a power cut wiping out the east coast of Vancouver a Island. These guys managed to put together a basic menu and keep going despite everywhere else having to close. We were just back from a 2 day kayaking trip and wanted to eat and go back to our self catering cottage. With nowhere open, including supermarkets, these good... More
