When you begin to explore the Wilmington historic district, you are likely to come across The Basics early on, as it is on Front Street facing out from the Cotton Exchange. It doesn't look terribly impressive, being essentially "just" a cafe, but the atmosphere is friendly and comfortable, nothing matches, and the food is delicious. We've been there for brunch... More

I frequent Wilmington 4 -6 times a year.. This morning having friends with me this trip I suggested Basics for Brunch... What a mistake. I am not sure why our server was so very rude. We were not difficult and ordered no special request. It seemed that any interaction was a huge imposition for her..When needing change for the bill,... More

While on vacation stopped for lunch on the recommendation of a friend. I had the tomato basil soup and a chicken BLT and my wife had the Grateful Bread sandwich. Everything was very good - the tomato basil soup was one of the best I ever tasted. Service was a little off on our visit. There are enough interesting items... More

The food at The Basics is simply fantastic. Combining Authentic Southern style cooking, with some modern twists, the menu is eclectic yet familiar. The Shrimp over stoneground Grits, in a Cajun BBQ sauce, finally presented me with grits that I could actually enjoy. Great Shrimp and a wonderful entrée. Another excellent dish is a breakfast called Southern Benedict. Eggs over... More

Southern-style grits (tomatoes, onions, peppers and feta) were delicious, blueberry pancakes were large and fluffy. The wait staff was friendly and attentive and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal.

The restaurant was packed and the seating accommodations were poor, The food was average, I just expected more -- it was advertised as a trendy restaurant which was more of their focus than the food.

Fresh food and friendly staff made this place a top pick for us. Went for dinner and had the meatloaf and the fried chicken. Both excellent and the grit fries were the fav as we had never had them before! Would definitely go back again and found this place was better than the other higher ranked places we ate at!

As visitors from California, we are always on the prowl for top-notch Southern cooking. (I grew up in NC, so I know what it should be like!!!) We had maybe the best fried green tomatoes ever....well not as good as Mamaw Ray's, but you know what I mean. Outstanding appetizers and salads. Hush puppies were light and not too greasy.... More

There weren't many breakfast choices and the food was just OK. A little hard to find, if you don't enter the Cotton Exchange from Front Street. Service was fine.

This was our first visit to Wilmington and we plan to come back. My husband and I dined here on a Saturday night. No reservation and we were seated right away. Servers seemed busy- but were attentive. This is a well priced restaurant for the area. A very varied menu that was creative. Specials were delicious. Reasonable wine list. I... More
