For some reason, we tend to forget this spot when considering a night out. That is until Wilmington Restaurant Week, when we kind of "re-discover" it. True to form, Restaurant Week loomed, we remembered past great experiences and booked a reservation. The Basics is downtown, and parking can be a challenge, but the effort is worth it. The service here... More

Our group of 6 visited and had a variety of sandwiches. Everyone loved the flavors and I personally felt it was the best sandwich I've ever had. Go for the food and quick, easy service, not the ambiance - which is typical local sub shop. It can be busy but the staff is efficient and working the fastest they can... More

My friend and I went to The Basics for Sunday brunch. We got there around 10:30 and only had to wait for about ten minutes for a table. There seemed to be a much bigger crowd that got there around 11 and 11:30, so we were happy that we missed the rush. The service wasn't incredibly fast, but the atmosphere... More

Restaurant was very accommodating when we asked to sneak in late on Valentine's Day following a recommendation from a local. The waitress could sense we weren't thrilled with their prix fixe menu that night, and so suggested that we might like their "date night" option, which is two apps, entrees, and deserts, and a bottle of wine for $68 total... We had a Saturday Brunch (hamburger for one, French toast for the other) and it was quite good. My wife raved about the French Toast and my hamburger was very good; quite fresh, tasty and plentiful. The service was also very good and, over all, it was a very pleasant experience. We would definitely return for dinner or lunch sometime.... More

Located in the Cotton Exchange off Front Street side, Basics is close to Thalian Hall and provides a good 'basic' southern menu, quick and efficient service. Four of us dined there for the first time in late January and were very pleased with the food and the price. We had the fried oyster appetizer; and I had the pan fried... More

My wife and I arrived at the restaurant, being greeted by the accommodating wait staff. I order, what I later found out, was over-priced brisket special and my wife ordered the pork chop. My wife's pork chop tasted burnt to her, but with delicious rissotto and cauliflower mash. My brisket was tasty but was much too fatty, accompanied with delicious... More

wilmington is a restaurant town. the basics has passed the test of time here. we go for lunch, but breakfast and dinner are just as good. please understand the menu is not extensive- hence the name The Basics". the prices are very fair, the service is southern friendly, but the FOOD is the star. excellent southern gourmet cooking. the chefs... I ate here twice this week--both times with a large work party (10 and 9). It's downtown and very convenient to work but I generally don't choose to go here myself. I will go to The Basics when I'm meeting someone else who wants to go there. For one lunch I had the Cobb Salad with the fried chicken (instead... More

This is my favorite lunch place downtown! Their pimento cheese and tomato soup dish is true comfort food! Their veggie plate was also absolutely wonderful. I have yet to be disappointed here.
