Good food

Good oysters. Great staff. First time here and had a great experience. Small seatings makes for good conversation with friends and those seated near by. The seating is at a horseshoe shaped bar so very easy to strike up a conversation with other diners.

A completely fun place...the menu is limited (thankfully), the oysters are to die for. The place is fun and the employees obviously enjoy working there (one guy has been there for 41 years and several others for over 20. We were a bit confused regarding the procedure for sitting, ordering, etc., but then we are Yankees but were not afraid... More

First time to visit this local establishment. They take you to room in back, with a bar, sit you down, and serve up the best steamed oysters ever! Our oysters were hand shucked for us by Mr Griff who has been there 47 years. The oysters came from the James River and they were huge! We also had peeled steamed... More

I had not been to Sunnyside in five years and had forgotten how much fun it is. The oysters are wonderful! The atmosphere is comfortable and out of the box. It is a hoot to drink beer and chat with the shuckers and other guests. Loved it.

Fun, offbeat, extremely casual oyster bar. Food was great...I'm not an oyster fan, but there were many other options. I've travelled a lot and this oyster bar is one of the most unusual & fun places I've eaten! Only drawback is there are not that many seats...be prepared to have a beer or two in the bar before you can... More

Getting there really early to avoid the crowds (as we had read in a couple of articles), we were surprised to find the carpark fairly full. Inside, several photographers were posing folks for shots - turns out it was the Oyster Bar's 80th birthday and all four owners and most of the staff were on hand to have photos taken... More

This experience is something I always look forward to when visiting family. I have been going since I was eight and the tradition continues. I always see tourists from other towns and states who come just for the delicious oysters and friendly staff. The butter and cocktail sauce is heated in a kettle served with crackers and a cold beer.... More

This oyster bar is the real deal! It's only open in months that have an R in them, and it's nothing fancy, but everything delectable. If you are brave enough to try the Red Rooster, be forewarned that it is a sinus clearer. Have milk or several beers ready to easy the pain. I guarantee that you will have a... More

As the saying goes, don't judge a book by its cover. This place from outside definitely looks like it was established in 1935, but once inside it is awesome. I believe it's on the historical register. It was a very surprising and pleasant experience. Words can not describe it. If you like oysters, shrimp and scallops, you have to experience... More

Eat oysters, soda crackers, and drink cold beer. Its excellent. Unless you are not an oyster eater and have been drug there by oyster eating friends, don't order their other offering.
