Description: THE STORY BEHIND 1918 The Great War was drawing to a close when Friedrich...
THE STORY BEHIND 1918 The Great War was drawing to a close when Friedrich Carl Gottleib Wallent put the finishing touches to his fine home in Murray Street, by chiseling the date in the foundation stone by the front door. His son Morris later became the mayor of Tanunda and took over the family home. More than 70 years later in 1992, an enterprising group of locals turned the proud Wallent home into the Barossa's first bistro grill - a friendly and generous place where Barossa winemakers could entertain their guests and visitors could relax after a hard day's wine tasting. In 1998 Tanya and Sid King visited 1918 as guests 17 years later, in 2015 the opportunity arose for The King Family to be the new custodians of this fine home of Barossa Hospitality. They are passionate about serving fresh, seasonally-inspired cuisine, accompanied by carefully selected wines from the Barossa's best and iconic Australian and International wineries - but guests are also welcome to bring their own special bottle. What you'll also find is a youthful passion and buzz, modern Australian tastes and flavours that are borrowed from Asia and the Middle East, and a genuine willingness to please.

A real fine dining experience

Service was excellent, food was good with some fusion incorporated into the traditional dishes. There was one miss where the steak was served with a vegetable dish that had too much spiciness which distracted the delicious taste of the steak. I would have kept the dishes as traditional as possible... read more

The white wine were fantastic. The Reds were excellent. To days soup was great chicken Moroccan style great local chic peas. The pan seared scallops were Devine served with blob pudding. The duck was so tender. Bean were cooked to perfection. The pork belly was amazing served with julienne Apple and Mayo dressing.

1918 was the best food we had in the Barossa Valley. Fresh and local with an excellent wine list, 1918 delivers a fine dining experience in a relaxed setting. Service was good without being fussy. A very enjoyable meal for all of us.

We had a gorgeous time at 1918! Fire was crackling, the space nice and warm - the perfect setting for a long lunch. Service was great and food was absolutely amazing - everything we ordered was delicious. We will definitely be returning.

We had a leisurely lunch here this week. The crackling fire was perfect. My husband had a steak that he said was perfect, while I had the beef cheeks, which were so tender that they hardly needed cutting. Dessert was perfect. Service was a little slow, but if I was going to complain, it would be that I ate too... More

Went there for lunch today. Service and main was 9/10. Desserts where 1/10 we had the dessert platter and it left a very sour taste in my mouth. We would go back, but not get any desserts

1918 has the potential to be an excellent restaurant - beautiful setting in an old cottage style house, open wood fire burning on a winters night and tasty and very well presented food. But the service really lets this place down. We dined at 1918 mid week, so not overly busy, yet we felt completely underwhelmed by the service. It... More

Thanks for your feedback, the fish of the day can change during service as we sell out of one portion, we begin selling the new portions, which would account for why you heard 2 different fish being offered. Regarding the service, we are really disappointed and will work on improving it. More

Once you remind yourself that 1918 is one of the best restaurants but in a small town and just accept the price tag you're all good. We had nice meals, if they'd been hotter I don't think I'd have been as disappointed as I was with our meals. The tasting platter for dessert was nice, but the cheese plate was... More

Great food, lovely atmosphere with the open fire on a chilly winters night. Staff were very attentive, would definitely go back
