Still good, but has seen better times

I had been to “Porphyra” a few years ago and I was impressed. The food was excellent and the wine list unusually good for a small touristic restaurant. We didn't have great expectations for the food since there were mainly people drinking at the bar when we arrived. Also there was no info from the waiter about what was available or fresh that night. Everything we ordered from the large menu was OK with him. Not to worry - the food was really good. The traditional Cretan pie... More

Friends who stay locally said that reviews of this restaurant varied depending which chef was working. We got a poor night. Food was mediocre and expensive.

We had grilled vegetables with vinegar, birka meze and stuffed tomatoes, pepper & zucchini and Myrthos beer (for 30E!). Everything was excellent. It is also possible to have special slow food courses.

This was the only big restaurant open in Makry-Gialos and so it was regularly used. The locals ate there as well and we find that it is always a good sign of good food. The local wine is exceelent (Organic and made by the local monastery) and the majority of the dishes on offer were from fresh produce - those... More

We stopped at Porfira's while driving towards Ierapetra. The place looked empty (it was Wednesday. In February). The cheerful old lady who runs the place whipped up a sumptuous meal for us: huge Cretan salads, dolmades filled with rice, kid goat with spinach, lamb chops with home-made fried tomatoes and the freshest and tastiest horta (wild greens) that we've ever... ..or the summer actually. My favourite place to eat when the Diaskari taverna is closed. Summer can be very busy since it is so closely positioned to the two major hotels but it stays open through the winter - when you will find many, many Greeks eating there. Which testifies to the quality of the food and the fairness of... More

There's a lot of good options in the area so this review may seem unfair. The food and service cannot be faulted. Price is reasonable too. A bit soul less - something missing and can't quite say what precisely. Ate here just the once - too many other excellent options locally.

Went there today after reading TripAdvisor and I guess I expected some more for a 4,5 rated restaurant. It was nothing wrong dont missunderstand me. The food was good, the staff was friendly and servicemnded and the restautant was cozy. But there was no extra according to me to give it more then a 3 rating. It was my first... More
