Skip the dessert no matter how tempted

This is a very popular eatery. Make a reservation and be in line when door opens at 6 if you want to eat dinner before 730. Eclectic. 1940's decor. Congenial staff. Fabulous meatloaf. Sadly, my first time here in the 20 years living in Raleigh and it was very good. Cool early 20th century atmosphere. The cakes are amazing. Had the crab cake sandwich which was good but not on the normal menu.

Its not secret that my family are BIG FANS of Hayes Barton Cafe. Eating dinner there is such a great experience from the atmosphere, to the excellent wait staff, to the kitchen crew all contribute to producing fabulous food and desserts. This place is one of the best kept secrets that a whole bunch of folks know about. We dined... More

We found this restaurant on TA. Definitely a local whole in the was place. There was a one hour plus wait for dinner, but we were there for dessert only. The had a large assortment of cakes, but only cakes. We ordered two slices to go, red velvet and coconut. The portions were huge, each slice easily could feed two... More

Loved this cafe! Awesome 50s themed decor. Pastry case was brimming with cakes and pies, sky high and three layers each. Tried the lemon-blueberry with cream cheese frosting, it was sinfully delicious! Worth the price of the slice--it was a very generous piece of cake, four of us shared it!

The desserts are amazing...chocolate peanut butter cake! Service was very slow on Saturday lunch. We had the burgers...delicious. Pimento cheese and bacon sandwich was so-so.

Every adjective that a truly excellent cake can garner is deserved by the Chocolate Kahlua w/ Heathbar Crunch Cake. Rich, sinful, succulent, moist and profoundly bittersweet chocolatety goodness. And one slice is the size of a wheel-chock; way more than can be consumed by one human. Share a slice and then take half home. (At $9, it is nearly worth... More

The best you can get is the famous five-points sandwich here. I can't recommend it enough! Both the ham and turkey are delicious and the fantastic dipping sauce is just great. And it goes without saying that their cakes are just great, the Tiramasu is my personal favorite but I've never had a bad one! I've never been for dinner,... More

Recently enjoyed an evening meal at this quaint nostalgic restaurant. Very small and cozy. Ordered a filet and it was wonderful. Served atop mashed potatoes was a nice touch. Never, ever leave this restaurant without having a dessert! The key lime pie and coconut cake are so-o-o good. Serving large enough to share or take home remaining portion.

If you have not had dinner at Hayes Barton Cafe & Dessertery, you have missed THE BEST place in town. Frank, Marget and the staff at HBCD have created a "don't miss" restaurant. While they are open at lunch, the real magic begins at dinner. The lights come down, sounds of the 40's fill the room, while nostalgic pictures look... More
