The Pit is certainly tasty. I highly suggest a reservation, because it tends to be very busy. My personal favorite is the beef brisket. The Pit has a wide variety of side items, and you get to pick two with each plate. I usually get to collard greens for one of my sides.

Went to this well known place last October with family who were visiting in town. Much bigger than it looks and service is always top notch. Not one thing that we ordered wasn't fab. Tender 'que and the pumpkin cornbread is to die for! Lots of selections, even the little kids could find something to eat. Great place for lunch... More

There is no other place to go. Whole hog pulled pork is AMAZING! Sides are good too. Get there before 11:30 if you want to sit right away. They also have Valet Parking.

Good barbecue, not the best, but very traditional and consistent. Went to the new location in Durham. Parking was on street at best.

So pork BBQ is some Eastern NC is known for. It is quite unique and even has variations within NC. Uncharacteristically, The Pit captures them in one place, like both chopped and shredded aversions, along with others. Another thing, most BBQ places are like fast food places, or very down homey type establishments. The Pit is actually is a full... More

If you love NC bbq and would like to try it with some different twists this is your place. I have eaten at both locations, Durham and Raleigh. Because of crowds I ate at the bars both time and the service was GREAT. Wonderful advice and great food.

As I am from the North I have come to love Eastern North Carolina vineger BBQ sauce and the way the pork is cooked. Tasty, tender and way too easy to eat. Their meatloaf taste like Mom's and their fried chicken is crispy and juicy. The biggest problem you'll have is deciding which sides to have.
