where the locals go

This is a surprising little gem off the beaten path that only locals know about. It is a cozy small place in a tiny strip mall, where no one would ever think to look, but the food is fantastic. Carribean food, completely different for the area, but a nice surprise.

I thoroughly enjoyed working and eating with Dave and Mary. High quality food and drink! In the kitchen and at the bar, this husband wife team really had something special. I'm sad to see them go, but best of luck to the establishment moving into Calypso's location. You have some big shoes to fill! Best wishes to Calypso staff on... More

Like others I have reviewed, what makes this restaurant great is that Dave is there making everything every night - with sous chef help of course! He excels in seafood but you have to like it spicy or let him know. Try his nut-encrusted-trigger-fish and you'll be back for it again, and again - you'll get in a feeding rut.... More

This is a great place. Mary is awesome, along with her rum punch ! This first time there I had the Blackened Trigger fish and it was delicious ! Then I tried the Carribean Shrimp & Banana Curry ... OMG it was fantastic !!! I could have licked the plate. Brought several friends last time and everyone had great food.... More

I asked the locals on a forum board where to eat and Calypso North was highly recommended! We stopped by for a late dinner on Valentine's day. Like the previous reviews said, the location is a bit off from the main roads but its not necessarily a bad thing. Very quiet! This was the first restaurant we have ever seen... More

Perhaps it's Morehead City's role as a key stop for yachties en route down the ICW to the islands for the winter. Otherwise there's no real reason to expect a Caribbean-style restaurant here at all, let alone one of this quality. (And thanks to the owner of friendly competitor Circa 81 to telling us about it!!). It's not on the... More

If you are looking for a quite place that is bright, airy and light then this is the perfect place to go. The food has a healthy Carribean twist. The mixed drinks are delightful. It is off the beaten path and a great place to go during tourist season to get away from the downtown area. The servicers are friendly... More

It was great one visit; food and service were excellent. Followed by disaster the next. Poor service, disrespect from the cooks and marginal product.

Although I used to frequent David & Mary's original Calypso on Arendell, I had not visited them on 20th...what a renewed treat! Mary still mixes great drinks and David works his magic in the kitchen. My partner chose the scallop special and I had the signature dish that I had been craving, bouillabaisse...both were perfect. Even though I ALWAYS question... More

We were visiting Morehead City for scuba diving/vacation and a local sales person recommended this restaurant. I'm so glad we followed her advice! We had a great dining experience. The atmosphere was very "Key West", quiet, and friendly. The shrimp & scallop stir-fry was outstanding. We would definitely go back.
