We have a few go to places in outer banks this being number one. It's pretty cheap, very dog friendly and damn good. Simple as that.

John's Drive-In is home to just about the best milkshakes on the planet. Get your basic vanilla or chocolate or add just about any "topping" to be mixed in. Trust me, the chocolate peanut butter malt is amazing. The peanut butter banana, also amazing. Their shakes aren't the only thing that's good here. The Mahi Mahi Boat is also a... More

Our first visit to the OBX and this was a great place to start. No inside seating more like a beach hut one sand dune away from the beach. But the dolphin fish was yummy. Shakes were good very casual fun place swim suite attire recommend

John's is a little over a mile from my beach cottage. I have actually walked there to grab a dolphin boat and a milk shake. John's is on the beach road and is small drive-up/walk-up across from the beach, not many places left like this one. You order at a window and they have a few picnic tables outside. The... More

Located on the beach access road, this is a great place to drive-in and grab a quick meal. It's a small building with outdoor seating only (picnic tables) directly across from the beach. Makes it an easy place to walk to off the beach too. Parking is provided. They have a variety of fast-food available, and it's all way better... More

Was recommended by long-time beach-goers as a must-stop. Had tried other "home-made" ice cream stores on the main drag and was disappointed. This was wonderful. Even on a busy Saturday, service was relatively fast and pleasant. Also had the mahi melt. Was good - not the best, but you need to remember this is basically a road-side shack shop. Staff... More

The food is great, but the milkshakes are the best on the beach. Don't miss out on this beach experience. John's has been around since 1978. Don't mind the look of the place, it's a favorite of all locals. The dolphin boat is the best. Parking is a problem at noon due to the high volume of customers.

If you have ever stopped at Hayman's Dairy Bar in Hebron, Ohio - this is Kitty Hawk's version. We knew what to expect by reading reviews so we were not surprised or disappointed. Only outside dining (which we knew) but there was a dumpster on one side of the building and a porta-potty on the other. We had five children... More

Great lunch! DH and I enjoyed the dolphin basket with large, tasty, sweet fish fingers fried perfectly with delicious hot fries and sweet tea with shaved ice sitting on at a picnic table wwith the soft breezes of early June embracing our shoulders. Cheap and delicious! It doesn't get better!
