We lucked into Tonali this past weekend, after an online search for a highly rated reasonably priced restaurant in the area around 15-501/University Drive. Four 20-somethings and two 50+ foodies agreed on Tonali, and we couldn’t have been more pleased. Pork ribs over potato/plantain mash, grouper tacos, yellowfin tuna empanadas, pork carnitas--even the house salad with hibiscus dressing was memorable.... More

Fantastic experience. Constantly attentive service. Unbelievable menu which changes based in availability of fresh local ingredients. Had the shrimp ceviches tostadas. They were so good I had to order something else so I could try more of their menu: the heirloom tomato and queso fresca salad. It too was incredible. Wish I was a local so I could eat here... More

We went back to Tonali's last night which was our third visit after a very long time. We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and helpfulness of the serving staff, they are not fast but who wants to be rushed? Language is a bit difficult for some but good enough, menu is totally readable with good explanations of the dishes, prices are... More

Food was delicious.....but pricey for serving size. We both had Paella which was cooked perfectly! Full of salmon, mussels, chorizo, and shrimp. Great blend of flavors. Wonderful flan for desert. Presentation was terrific on both. Good fresh flavored margarita. Chips a little greasy but the salsa was very good!

We went to this place after we heard about how authentic the food here was. It's in a small strip mall so parking can be a bit difficult. The decor and setting looked authentic and not typical of 'chain' restaurants. The staff seemed mostly Spanish-speaking - with a bit of English perhaps. Our waitress had trouble understanding what we ordered.... More

This was the first place we dined at during our visit to Durham and I wanted to go back every night after that! They accommodated my children, the food was fantastic. I had fish tacos prepared three different ways, my husband had tuna empanadas and we shared mussels in a red sauce. All three were fantastic. It was a fresh... More

Setting was good for sit-down casual dining. It looks like part of their menu is regularly the same and part changes nightly. The chips and salsa that we started with were unlike anything that I had had before, in a good way. For an entree, I had the soft shell crab with salad, but parts of which exceeded my expectations.... More

The food was good, but we didn't get exactly what we ordered. Two in our party are bilingual and gave orders in both English and Spanish bc waitress seemed confused. We also pointed on the printed menu to what we were ordering. There had also been confusion with our reservation. We had made it well in advance due to graduations... More

Amazing little Mexican restaurant tucked into an upscale mini-mall next to a ballet studio. Menu changes regularly and is heavily influenced by whatever is currently being harvested locally. Mixed drinks are very tasty and pretty unique, this was authentic Mexican with a very sophisticated polish.

Four of us visited for our first time after reading reviews. The restaurant is in a strip mall and is not a place to go for a special occasion. However, if you want freshly made food served steaming hot and full of flavor - this is the place. It certainly is not Tex-Mex as we enjoyed a chicken dish, paella,... More
