A Personal Favorite

My wife and I love this place. The environment is very intimate, the owners are incredibly welcoming, and the food is both creative and authentic to its source. This place can make a great date night spot and the menu is sufficiently interesting to enliven anyone who has had more than their share... read more

Went on a Saturday for lunch and my wife and I were the only people dining....interesting. The waitress had a scowl on her face from the moment we sat down to the moment we left. If I needed a refill or any other attention, I had to call her over. Seriously! One would think that this waitress would give just... More

Good fresh food made with fresh local ingredients. I was pleasantly surprised. However, if you're looking for a large tex-mex menu, this is not the place to go. Tonali is more of a boutique Mexican restaurant with few selections, but those selections they do have are always changing and fresh. Well worth a trip to try it out for yourself.

We fancied some Mexican food and took ourselves to Tonali on a Friday evening. Our initial disappointment was that guacamole was not on the menu. We shared empanada and taco starters, then I had a beef dish and my wife had pork. My beef was quite tough. The sauces were not too heavy as in some Mexican places, but were... More

Having lived in southern Californa for many years, I don't usually think of the cuisine as particularly interesting any more. Tonali's was a palate changer for me. The restaurant accommodated 13 of us with gracious, friendly and efficient service. Many of us are artists and appreciated the beautiful environment Tonali's presents. Colors, paintings. The chile relleno I had was very... More

This is really good Mexican food. There are no burritoes or Tex-Mex stuff on the menu. The fish tacos (whether mahi mahi or ahi tuna, bur especially the ahi tuna) are delicious. The owner is a classically trained chef, who decided to go back to his Mexican food heritage when he opened his own restaurant. The sauces on the main... More

Tonali's food is fresh, authentic, and delicious. The staff are friendly and add to the ambiance in that their first language is Spanish and communicating in English can be a challenge. The menu is FABULOUS! The huaraches are so good, fish tacos fresh, and the food is cooked fresh.

My husband and I decided to to try this restaurant after reading some good reviews. it certainly lived up and exceeded my expectations. The service was very good and the the food was excellent. The atmosphere is charming and not too large. We had a reservation for 6PM and at first there was plenty of room but within a few... More

In town to visit our son at Duke and were very pleased with this place. This is not your typical mexican restaurant. Everything we ordered from salmon to scallops was very well prepared and seasoned. The aztec stew was an extremely pleasing appetizer. Would definitely return.

I told the waitress I wanted my salmon entre without butter, explaining that I was on a diet. The cook took a little more time, but what came out was not only low calorie, but the best salmon I ever tasted. He made a great mix of vegatables in a flavorful sauce that was out of this world. The fish... More
