This is a throwback to some old timey restaurants, but we liked the food - oysters, shrimp in particular. Very good shrimp cocktail! Banana pudding was okay - just too heavy on the whipped cream. Parking not easy and neighborhood was a little iffy (but that's Durham),but we thought it was a reasonable value for the money.

Fresh fish of all kinds and cooked a variety of styles. Love that they offer traditional sauces and sides but also old favorites with wonderful twists on flavor! Casual setting with top shelf food. Variety of local craft beers and root beer on draft. Their soups rock!

I took a new friend to Fish Mongers, hoping to make a good impression. We ordered calamari appetizer and we both order Fish and chips. My complaint is about the heavy batter used on the calamari and fish. It was like eating a corn dog because it was so thick. The fish inside was good. They need to redo their... More

Sorry the breading was not what you expected. These are some of the most popular items on the menu and have been done the same way for years. Thanks for coming in. Try some of the Bar B Que, steamed and grilled foods should be more to your liking. Gary Bass Owner More

Had a short time in Durham for a look around and lunch and found Fishmonger's across from Brightleaf Square. Walking in was about to turn around as ceiling is falling down and place looks like it needs a good cleaning - probably does. Ordered fried oysters and an oyster poorboy - go for the former as roll is only soso.... More

The Fishmonger's Restaurant & Oyster Bar is wonderful. The restaurant and atmosphere is like a real crab shack - not pretentious . . . more beer joint. That is perfect for me. Gary Bass is he owner and he is an eccentric / entertaining character. Proud of his Texas roots, Gary shares story after story for the old restaurant building,... More

I grew up in small town Gulf coast Florida, and spent plenty of time in places that looked like Fishmongers. Heck I even worked in places that looked like this. The difference was that the food we served was good. Where to start, how about being out of my first choice for an appetizer. Then being out of my choice... More

One job. Fresh seafood. How?! can they mess it up...three times?! My husband and I live nearby and were so excited to find a "fresh" seafood place within walking distance. We didn't really mind the cheap decor, the so-so service, or the watered-down drinks, anticipating great, well-cooked seafood as our reward. We were wrong. Fried fish: dry and bland. Grilled... More

Sorry for your hostility it is one thing to report that you were not happy with a couple of dishes; although as you report living in Miami not sure what you know about fish and chips or crab cakes as no one from Europe or Maryland has complained about these dishes. To throw in an off hand comment that our... More

My wife and I arrived in Durham late in the afternoon and after stopping at our B & B we headed into town. We were driving around to get a sense of the town, when we passes Fishmonger's. The fact that there was inexpensive tablecloths and seemed quite busy made me sense this was the place to eat. My wife... More

Aged, slightly dilapidated looking even- that was my first impression of Fishmongers as I walked in. I am so glad that my husband and I stayed! The food was very good (we both ordered fish and chips), and I could drink the feta dressing! Service was excellent, and their prices were reasonable, too.

Service is always lackluster however they always make up for it with the quality of the seafood - great beer selection and fabby dessert
