I went after I purchased a groupon deal. I've been looking for affordable but quality seafood place in Durham and was really hopeful that Fishmonger's would fit the bill. However, after going, I think that what some other reviewers are saying is probably correct: it used to be better, but "it has... read more

Fishmongers has always had that rustic, straight off the boat feel to it. The spartan, nautical theme ensured that the seafood had to be the star and it was. We stopped there for lunch and found it looking exactly the same as 6 years ago. However, this time there were very few customers there and it just did not have... More

My husband and I love seafood so we were excited to eat here. The restaurant itself is not in good shape but that didn't bother us. Our server Joey was very helpful and had lots of personality. He recommended a local beer for my husband which I wish I would have also got. My husband had the barbecue shrimp and... More

This was our first visit to Fishmongers. It was clear when we walked in the door that the decor and service were casual and laid back. Much to our surprise the food was great. My wife and I had grilled copia which was excellent. Our son had chicken bbq which he devoured. We'll go back for more. Next time I'll... More

This is a throwback to some old timey restaurants, but we liked the food - oysters, shrimp in particular. Very good shrimp cocktail! Banana pudding was okay - just too heavy on the whipped cream. Parking not easy and neighborhood was a little iffy (but that's Durham),but we thought it was a reasonable value for the money.

Fresh fish of all kinds and cooked a variety of styles. Love that they offer traditional sauces and sides but also old favorites with wonderful twists on flavor! Casual setting with top shelf food. Variety of local craft beers and root beer on draft. Their soups rock!

I took a new friend to Fish Mongers, hoping to make a good impression. We ordered calamari appetizer and we both order Fish and chips. My complaint is about the heavy batter used on the calamari and fish. It was like eating a corn dog because it was so thick. The fish inside was good. They need to redo their... More

Sorry the breading was not what you expected. These are some of the most popular items on the menu and have been done the same way for years. Thanks for coming in. Try some of the Bar B Que, steamed and grilled foods should be more to your liking. Gary Bass Owner More

Had a short time in Durham for a look around and lunch and found Fishmonger's across from Brightleaf Square. Walking in was about to turn around as ceiling is falling down and place looks like it needs a good cleaning - probably does. Ordered fried oysters and an oyster poorboy - go for the former as roll is only soso.... More

The Fishmonger's Restaurant & Oyster Bar is wonderful. The restaurant and atmosphere is like a real crab shack - not pretentious . . . more beer joint. That is perfect for me. Gary Bass is he owner and he is an eccentric / entertaining character. Proud of his Texas roots, Gary shares story after story for the old restaurant building,... More

I grew up in small town Gulf coast Florida, and spent plenty of time in places that looked like Fishmongers. Heck I even worked in places that looked like this. The difference was that the food we served was good. Where to start, how about being out of my first choice for an appetizer. Then being out of my choice... More
