Come for the sushi!

This place is weird. The front of the restaurant is a really good sushi bar, complete with Asian chefs wearing happi coats. The rest of Kurama is reserved for awfully loud, and tacky Western-style teppanyaki shows. Obviously, teppanyaki isn't my thing, so I'll get back to the sushi. In a land... read more

Said to be the best local Asian restaurant by our hotel staff, an quite good! We didn't want to sit at low hibachi table, had small table in sushi bar area, but ordered hibachi steak and scallops along with sushi. Food nicely done, service a bit cumbersome, but also friendly with nice ambiance.

This is the traditional country style Japanese cooking -- you sit around a large open grill, and the chef is part of the show. It is fun for all ages, and certainly our chef engaged the kids by many pyromaniac tricks with stacked onion "volcanoes", and other fun items. I've been to other Japanese "robata style" places, and this actually... More

This is our favorite place to eat on Durham. Reservations are accepted. We have a favorite waiter that has been there for years and it's like seeing family when we visit. Prices are reasonable to other Japanese steakhouses.

Go for the sushi! There are several sushi options in Durham, but after discovering the sushi at Kurama we won't go anywhere else. This place is no frills, but by far is the freshest and most delicious sushi in Durham. The chef is so nice and will accommodate requests. We are so glad to have found the sushi here because... I have been to Kurama five or six times and I have LOVED it every time. The sushi bar is amazing and the guy serving sushi is so friendly. The hibachi is delicious and I love the way it's served. The teriyaki chicken is the best! The steak is also amazing. The shrimp is cooked to perfection and I would... More

We ate so much and all of it was fresh and prepared for our tastes. My wife loved the selections of Sushi and I enjoyed the hibachi chicken, miso soup and fabulous salad with fresh ginger dressing. We will return.

Kurama is a very nice Japanese restaurant with a full bar, a Sushi bar, and 3 dining rooms where 8-10 people sit around a grill and food is prepared in front of them with the show often almost as good as the food. The food is very good and the portions are large — most people take home their left-overs... More
