Better than your average 'diner' fare

This diner is nestled on a Durham street adjacent to some university housing construction. We almost missed it and boy, are we glad we didn't. Split pea with ham soup was creamy with bits of ham included. You wouldn't think a diner was a place to get Spinach Enchiladas (one of their daily specials... read more

I sat at the counter, ordered the shepherds pie and it was ready faster than ordering a Big Mac. But, I wasn't being rushed...it's just the food was delivered quickly. While enjoying my meal, an elderly gentleman whom was obviously a regular sat next to me and was greeted by everyone in the diner. I could tell they all enjoyed... More

Sharon and I were taking the slow, meandering way home from our trip to Raleigh and we found ourselves in Durham at dinner time. We started looking for a place to eat and we spotted the great neon sign above Elmo's Diner. Always suckers for neon, we decided that was the place we wanted to eat. Once inside we could... More

Went here to have a geezer breakfast with Duke classmates, class of 1973. My California omelette was yummy and the fresh made biscuits and gravy rocked. Service beyond wonderful and friendly. Allowed the geezers to drink coffee and tell old stories. One health nut ordered oatmeal with a side of bacon. Close to East Campus. A great time. Go here!

This place is huge. I ordered the biscuits and gravy, which also came with eggs and two sides (I picked grits and sausage). The gravy was a little bland, but for that amount of food for less than 10$ - it was a great deal. They were good about keeping the coffee coming. My wife was hardly impressed by her... More

Breakfast is served all day, which worked out for us since we like to sleep late. They also serve a regular lunch and dinner menu as well. Food was great and delicious! We ordered omelettes, waffles, biscuits, bacon, pancakes, etc. The biscuits were amazing!!! We will definitely be returning!

A local favorite with excellent food and service. Fun, up staff that makes you want to come back. Very kid friendly... and they tolerate adults, too.

I usually have breakfast at Elmos every time I am in Durham. We had a great breakfast this morning with the family. I had turkey sausage and eggs and toast, two of us had blueberry pancakes which they both loved, and two omelets with hot salsa. Not a speck of food left on any of our plates. All quite tasty... Went here on a Saturday late afternoon. Typical diner fare with something for everyone. This would be a good place to bring small children as breakfast is served anytime and the atmosphere is fairly loud.

Located on 9th St by the Duke East Campus, an artsy/funky/bohemian Durham neighborhood. Decent off street parking. The interior is spartan, exposed brick, formica tables, vinyl seat covers. We went early for breakfast Saturday around 8 am. The restaurant was empty enough at that hour that when we drove past, my first impression was that they were closed; by the... More
