I really like Elmo's sunflower bread, whether its a sandwich or french toast, Yum! I was there the other day and noticed the "no guns allowed" decal on the main door was very much scratched up and it looked trashy. I don't know how a small sign like that gets so scratched up, it looks like people/customers are doing it...... More

This is the most misleading review I have ever experienced. My wife and I came for a late lunch and were completely disappointed with Elmo's. First we were sat at a very small booth. The dinner was unassuming enough and had the feel we were trying to obtain. We were sat by a manager, and after he brought us our... More

With so many great restaurants in Durham across the spectrum of dining choices, I can't recommend Elmo's. If you're interested in eating at a local icon, go with low expectations. I chose meatloaf because it's typically easy to make a decent meatloaf; this one wasn't. Unfortunately, the sides were just as disappointing. I can't recall what my wife ordered but... More

If you want "non-franchise" eating close to the Duke campus, it is hard to go wrong with Elmo's Diner on 9th St. in Durham - particularly in the breakfast and lunch space. Elmo's is housed in a vintage building on the east side of 9th Street. They have a fairly long menu of offerings, most of which are tasty, but... More

While Durham is now quite the restaurant town, there is a reason a long but quickly moving line is always at Elmo's. This is truly a classic breakfast and brunch location. The service is timely and the food is very good and well portioned. Prices are fair and the staff is very friendly. Do not be discouraged by the line-... More

Still not sure why this place is so popular. I ordered the omelette and my wife got french toast. It was nothing special. I'm thinking there must be other meals that are better than what I had.

We last had a meal at Elmo's a couple of years ago (we don't live in Durham and visit periodically). It was a fun and delicious breakfast. We tried Elmo's for lunch this time and were disappointed. My wife asked for fresh (i.e., not toasted) bread on her turkey sandwich. The bread was crusty and stale and had some blue... More

When you just want a good, home cooked meal, this is the place! I have eaten here several times, and it is always delicious, home-cooked food. Great comfort food! The place to go when you want a meal you can always count on.

This was the first place that I tried Shrimp and Grits. It is the best in town. I have tried them at several other places for brunch and have to say Elmo's is over the top. Great flavor, smooth creamy grits and a plate full! Great work Elmo's
