Everything from 'Scratch'

I'm at a conference in Durham. One of the locals suggested this place for lunch. It's located on a side street / alley, a little tricky to find. The logo is a blue chicken - may be chicken scratch is the name derivation. Turns out, everything is made from scratch. I tried the corned beef on rye... read more

We went to Scratch for a quick lunch. I had the hot corned beef sandwich, which was fabulous. My wife had the pork belly bahn mi, also wonderful. A great lunch stop.

We got to Scratch close to closing. Knew we wouldn't have much to choose from (which was so sad considering the options listed on the boards!) The pies looked absolutely amazing and homemade. None of the manufactured visual "perfection" you find in many bakeries. Instead, pies and cookies that looked like someone had actually put their hands on them. We... More

Really? Wouldn't take our lunch order at 11:20. Customer service.... NOT! Menu looked good but I guess we'll never know! Went to Old Hsvana are were greeted with a warm hello and a smile.

My family stopped by Scratch during a road trip and were met with the best meal of our journey. Phoebe Lawless has been recognized nationally and she brings such goodness and expertise to to this warm and inviting spot. Don't pass up the avocado toast and be sure to pick up the Bacon Jam for later. A "must eat" place... More

We bought a whole pie for our daughter's birthday -- Lemon Chess. It was perfect, perfect. Put some whipped cream on it at home. Three adults and two adolescent grandsons polished it off, ever so slowly so as not to miss a morsel of flavor. Before heading home, however, we had espresso, some chocolate donut muffins, and a day old... More

Despite Scratch's consistently high rating, I had to weigh in after eating lunch here today. It's delightfully calm and unpretentious. The location is somewhat hidden away but worth parking and walking to this little urban oasis. The lunch menu is limited, but very fresh and international. The 3-pieces of bread served with my carrot bisque were the best I have... More

Stumbled upon this cute and homey establishment. We only had a cinnamon roll and donut/muffin, both of which were delicious. Looked like a great little menu. Will definitely stop in the next time we are staying in the city. Very small but more seating outside if the weather is nice.

The chocalate and apple tarts were awesome with a flaky tasty crust and a wonderful rich filling. The carnitas benedict was excellent with pork that was satsfying and the poached eggs were perfect. Great restaurant!

Went with family that indulged me because I am a foodie and they just come for the ride. Went on Saturday afternoon and only baked goods and brunch menu was available. We had hoped for lunch but like I said, my family was just in it for the ride. Menu with duck eggs does not appeal to a mother that... More
