Thanks fellow contributors for directing us to scratch. After dropping our daughter off at RDU, we wanted to go somewhere for breakfast. While Scratch is not a full service breakfast place, we did enjoy their great homemade sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit along with their muffin donuts which were excellent. They've got a brunch on weekends which looks very good.... More

My mom found an article claiming that this bakery was one of 6 great places for pie in the US. She talked about it for 6 months before our trip to Durham. This place makes wonderful pie! If you enjoy homemade pie with real stuff like butter come early. You will not be disappointed!

In order to get a seat, we arrived shortly after the doors opened on a Saturday morning and were not disappointed. Excellent fresh baked goods and egg dishes-- the doughnut muffins are great! Coffee was good and prices were reasonable. It was a good way to start a busy day.

I don't go here often but the few times I have been I understand the national reputation. Will indulge in pie this summer if I have been good but I have had breakfast and I recommend it.

I finally made an effort to eat here after tasting their creations at the farmer's market and the Hub Farm. I'm glad my daughter and I visited. The location is interesting. It's situated in a side alley in Downtown Durham which adds to its charm. It's small, so I can see it getting crowded easily when busy. There's both indoor... More

My only negative is they run out so quick of their goodies each day. Always good pies and interesting twists on their desserts.

A little bit tricky to find but well worth the effort. Recently enjoyed a delicious weekend breakfast at their outside tables - everything from savory crepes to buttermilk donut muffins (yes, try 'em!) was fresh and tasty, very reasonably priced, too. Busy busy place - service was efficient and friendly - would love to return and sample more of their... More

The food is made fresh daily. Coffee is great and the chocolate or buttermilk dough muffins are wonderful . I have been there twice and service is always friendly.

This bakery cafe has a wide selection from donut muffins and biscuits to crostatas and grits. Also, they have great coffees. We went on a Sunday morning and they were quite crowded, but they willingly brought out more folding tables and chairs to set up outside when there wasn't an available place for us to sit.

This is our second time there and is a great attraction to Durham. Food and service are great but the place is popular Saturday am and can be difficult to sit. But the staff is great and the food is local and fresh and excellent.
