Yummy --but expensive

Scratch has become a favorite when we visit Durham -- both the shop and the stand at the local farmers market. We've become particularly fond of their sesame sorghum granola - heavenly. Buttermilk donut biscuits (also in chocolate), and sausage biscuits are yummy, but pricey.

This tiny place with truly awful and rude counter service has some wonderful offerings that make a visit worthwhile. If you can get past the crazy jumble of tables and chairs and people standing over you, the poor location of the chalkboard menu and the confusion of the ordering process, you will be rewarded with some creative and tasty eats.... We ordered sweet potato pies for my mom's 70th birthday party & the pies where terrible! First, I would like to say that the staff was very nice when we picked up the pies & they did make the pies out of their regular season. I thought that was very nice. I was unable to taste the pies because I... More

I'm at a conference in Durham. One of the locals suggested this place for lunch. It's located on a side street / alley, a little tricky to find. The logo is a blue chicken - may be chicken scratch is the name derivation. Turns out, everything is made from scratch. I tried the corned beef on rye - sort of... More

We went to Scratch for a quick lunch. I had the hot corned beef sandwich, which was fabulous. My wife had the pork belly bahn mi, also wonderful. A great lunch stop.

We got to Scratch close to closing. Knew we wouldn't have much to choose from (which was so sad considering the options listed on the boards!) The pies looked absolutely amazing and homemade. None of the manufactured visual "perfection" you find in many bakeries. Instead, pies and cookies that looked like someone had actually put their hands on them. We... More

Really? Wouldn't take our lunch order at 11:20. Customer service.... NOT! Menu looked good but I guess we'll never know! Went to Old Hsvana are were greeted with a warm hello and a smile.

My family stopped by Scratch during a road trip and were met with the best meal of our journey. Phoebe Lawless has been recognized nationally and she brings such goodness and expertise to to this warm and inviting spot. Don't pass up the avocado toast and be sure to pick up the Bacon Jam for later. A "must eat" place... More

We bought a whole pie for our daughter's birthday -- Lemon Chess. It was perfect, perfect. Put some whipped cream on it at home. Three adults and two adolescent grandsons polished it off, ever so slowly so as not to miss a morsel of flavor. Before heading home, however, we had espresso, some chocolate donut muffins, and a day old... More

Despite Scratch's consistently high rating, I had to weigh in after eating lunch here today. It's delightfully calm and unpretentious. The location is somewhat hidden away but worth parking and walking to this little urban oasis. The lunch menu is limited, but very fresh and international. The 3-pieces of bread served with my carrot bisque were the best I have... More
