Soul Food

This is really good food. I have never had the desserts, but they look wonderful. Cornbread is fantastic, as are the collards. Enjoy!

Fresh hot corn bread with a side of butter served before your platter arrives. Food is homemade in an open kitchen. The menu includes a variety of southern fixings such as: collard greens, black eyed peas, mac and cheese, and banana pudding. Atmosphere is vibrant and great for families. Prices are reasonable. I have traveled here several times from out... More

Average food, terrible service My family was visiting from out of state and had a hankering for Southern food. Sadly, I recommended Mert’s Heart and Soul in uptown Charlotte, a black-owned restaurant patronized early on by Hugh McColl when it was known as “Ga. on North Tryon.” We went for dinner at 7 p.m. on a Friday night in July.... For the portions and quality the price seemed high. All the food we had was ok but nothing special. There are other options in that price range and area that are much better such as smoke city or queen city q. There wasn't anything in the food or service that stood out.

Yum! Started off with the fried green tomatoes! However you only get 4 of them as the appetizer. We ordered the blackened pork (little spicy) & fried chicken. Both were VERY good! We had various sides- green beans, black eyed peas, mashed potatoes, Mac & cheese. All were yummy. Great service. We had no room for desert! But the cakes... More

If you are in the area or even if you are not this is a place to eat really good southern cooking. The cornbread and lemon-aid are good starters. All the food is really tasty and the portions are so enough you will leave very happy and very full. The decor is awesome and it fits with the atmosphere. I... More

I recommend this restaurant 100% we ate midday Sunday without a wait and the service was friendly and prompt. All of the food was delicious - fried green tomatoes, chicken and chopped bbq. We WILL be back very soon!

Husband and I were in town for a convention and after inquiry, Mert's was highly recommended by both locals and visitors, we went on a Sunday afternoon hoping that we wouldn't have a long wait and we didn't, it was not crowded as expected, we were seated right away, 1st person we saw at cash register wasn't friendly, 1st impression... So after walking around uptown charlotte my boyfriend and I decided to stop in a try some food. The best decision EVER!!! I got the pulled pork w/ salad n home fries while he tried the fried whiting & eggs w/ grits and home fries. The food was great seasoned perfectly with generous portions. Pricing is reasonable not overly expensive... More
