This is pretty solid soul food, the cornbread wasn't great--it was bitter and not sweet but everything else was delish--the fish was wells seasoned and tasty, the steamed cabbage was on point, and the mac and cheese was cheesy but not overly cheesy.

Mert's is located in the downtown area. The restaurant is a very small place, and we were lucky we got there before the lunch rush or we would have had a long wait. There were 8 of us in our party, and I can only imagine the wait we would have had. Our waitress appeared to have a slight attitude,... More

Tasty and delightful, the food was piping hot and appealing to the sight. Our party feast on the BBQ beef ribs, fried cat fish and chicken wings, blackened pork chops, steamed cabbage, mac & cheese and collard greens. Don’t leave without a slice of “heaven” banana pudding cake. The staff was courteous and offered menu suggestions. The lists of menu... More

I'm partial to side dishes, and this place was great. The very best macaroni and cheese I ever ate -- three kinds of cheeses and baked in the oven. The cornbread came out in large individual loaves for each guest and it was sweet as cake. My friend raved about the collard greens which contained bits of tomato. They also... More

At at the downtown location. Food was great and very affordable. I had salmon cakes, okra, cabbage german chocolate cake and beer......all for less than $20 Food was great, staff very friendly. Busy place at dinner, so you will probably have to wait.

My friends & I visited here recently. We ordered the fried catfish, salmon cakes & fried whiting. They also served cornbread with the meals, probably the best I've ever had! The main dishes & sides were very good. Our complaint is with the waitress/service. When we arrived the restaurant was mostly full although not very busy. Our waitress was not... More

At the recommendation of the hostess and Lamar, a Walgreens employee, I tried the sweet potato cake and it was delicious. I went back to the restaurant for additional meals and they were all excellent.

This place has some of the best food around. The menu gives you plenty of options and the prices are reasonable. I enjoyed the salmon cake dinner. They were great with a spicy kick. The cornbread that comes with the meal was very good. I also enjoyed the coconut cake that was truly made from scratch with love :). This... More

As we were visiting Charlotte for the day, my husband wanted to eat some soul food! I researched and chose Mert's. Am I glad I picked it...it was absolutely awesome! I enjoyed the food at Mert's and I do not like everybody's food. The collard greens were fresh and topped with tomatoes/onions. Cornbread delicious. The dining room leaves a lot to be desired but I went for the food. I'd eat here again.
