Stopped in for lunch. The placed doesn't look to great from the outside. The building needs some work. The inside lighting could be a little brighter also. The waitresses were friendly and service good. The food was OK. The BBQ sauce could have been a little thicker.

When we stopped by Old Hickory House in the Spring of 2014, we discovered they were closed due to an earlier fire. Recently we heard they had fixed things up and reopened so we stopped for lunch. If you had not known there had been a fire, you can't tell it from any of the interior. Maybe the ceiling had... More

Went to old hickory house for late lunch (1.25pm) today, we’ve been several times previous to the smoker grease fire they had that shut it down for some time. I was excited to see the place after the remodel! Didn’t notice a thing that had changed, it was still dingy. The place is poorly lit, the floor is concrete with... More

We've had this venerable (began operation in 1956) on our NC Barbecue Bucket List for more than a few years now. Last Tuesday we paid them a visit, and it was much less than we'd hoped for, much less in almost every respect. There is little here that represents the more traditional NC barbecue restaurant, which doesn't mean it has... More

Several years ago, we went here often and it was a favorite. We haven't been in that part of town recently and decided to return for nostalgia. It was about 6:30pm on Tuesday and only had two other tables occupied -- should have been a clue! Order pork BBQ plates with beans, slaw and fries. The slaw appeared to have... More

You'll feel like you've stepped back in time. You aren't going for the scenery but the food is good. They also have an open pit behind the counter where you can see the meat cooking. I always enjoy this place. The service is nice, friendly and fast.

Maybe because we got a bunch to go but I thought it was pretty average. We ordered the pulled pork and the brisket and couldn't tell the difference! The meat was dry and the sauce on the side had very little flavour. Going off other reviews we must have just had a bad experience, sorry not all that impressed.

One downfall some bbq joints is lack of beer. Not here. I had a combo of pork, beef, and ribs [pork]. First, the bad - the beef was some dry and very tough. [I should not have bothered trying - beef rarely good outside of Texas.] Ribs were good, pork was great. Interestingly, they poured a red sauce over it... More

Had BBQ Pork sammidge, stew, puppies, & cold beer. The prices are easy on the wallet. Place smells like your actually inside the smoker and that alone made it worth the trip. Guy doing the smoking was nice and even recommended other area BBQ joints. That's always a good sign of someone confident in there own stuff when they can... More

The barbecue is OK, but it's the Brunswick stew that I go for. Consistently good. Great "barbecue house" ambiance.
