Never had Shrimp & Grits? Try it here.

My daughter, who recently moved to Chapel Hill, took me here the first time I visited her in CH. Shrimp and grits is their signature dish, we were told, and a real novelty dish for us northerners. It was good, all right, as were all the trimmings and desserts too. Service was satisfactory... read more

My shrimp and grits were OK, but not the best I've ever had. In fact the shrimp tasted a bit too "old". The grits were good. The menu was very limited - but had many seafood choices. I personally would not go back.

We had dinner here recently mid-week. We split the jalapeño hush puppies, and most of us ordered the shrimp and cheese grits, which were delicious. Dessert (including the chocolate cake) was heavenly. An alum told us that this is where parents would take their college kids for a nice meal (as opposed to a place college students could regularly afford... More

We had the hard crab soup (great), the Carolina sampler (more to follow) and shared a banana pudding (great, plenty for two). The sampler contained good BBQ (the vinegar based kind with a bit of heat from red pepper), corn bread with pepper (great), collard greens (great), and hoppin' john (not so great). The hoppin' john was disappointing. It was... More

My Aunt just took me here last night while visiting Chapel Hill. Very cute restaurant with good service. I had the shrimp and grits which were very good but my favorite thing was the appetizers. We had the fired oysters and they were the best I have ever had! So tasty and the dipping sauce was yummy. We also had... More

'50s-'60s kitchen dinette sets inside aren't my thing but the bamboo surrounded patio is a wonderful place to have a meal. The Shrimp and Grits here are the best I've had and no surprise given the history and kitchen staff excellence. Attentive service; reasonable prices. I've eaten here numerous times and never disappointed. Not to be missed.....

With all the hype about this place, we made it our business to stop here for dinner. While the shrimp and grits were very good, the pulled pork was too spicy, the corn bread wasn't good, but the servers were really nice and friendly, portion size was average. I wouldn't make it a priority to come here again but if... More

Crooks has been a favorite of this Chapel Hill scene for many years. It has the best of authentic southern dishes but with terrific flair and quanranteed freshness and ingredients.

Crooks, as it is commonly known, sits on the corner of Franklin Street and Merritt Mill Rd. You can't miss it; there is a large pig on the roof. My son lives in Miami and cannot come to Chapel Hill without a meal here. That is, shrimp and grits. He says it has the best shrimp and grits he has... More

This very small bistro at the corner of Franklin Street and North Merritt Mill Road in downtown Chapel Hill is certainly not unknown, but boy is it a find. Parking can be a challenge as their own lot behind the bistro is tiny, but they also have use of parking on Franklin Street at another business - check with the... More
