I heard great reports on this restaurant. My grandson & I had lunch....ordered the same barbecue, plate with slaw & hush puppies. N.C. barbecue has a vinegar base..not a tomato base. The iced tea was excellent...an extra pitcher. Service was very good. A warm jar of hot sauce was brought to the table. Very good but use sparingly If you like... More

Barbecue is fantastic! The potato salad and cole slaw are perfectly prepared in a vinegar base and it's not too sweet which I much prefer over the sugary versions I've tried elsewhere. Fast, fresh, and filling. And the hush puppies....ohhhhh myyyyyy! Can't be beat!

I am a local and have driven past this place for 30 years and never stopped in until today. I ordered a bbq sandwich with fries and hushpuppies. The vinegar based barbeque is okay, not too fatty. The fries are cut in-house and would have been good had they drained a little more grease off of them. The hushpuppies were... More

Great small family bbq ambiance and authentic NC. However, there are plenty of other bbq places which have a better overall bbq (q shack, Smokey's). Good service and we got some good homemade pie to go.

Placed a catering order for a year end event for adults and was pleased with the food and service. The order placed over the phone was correct, the packaging of the food appropriate and ready for service at the event. The guests asked where the barbecue was purchased and agreed it was excellent. Site also has a dining room but... More

This is one of the many bbq restaurants on the historic barbecue trail. On this trip I tried 7 of the 25 listed restaurants. Of them all Allen & Son was far away the best. Just the right smoke and texture (medium chopped).

Being from South Carolina, we are self-proclaimed BBQ connoisseurs and having heard that Allen and Son had some of the best in the state, we decided to critique it for ourselves. The outside doesn't look like much but then again, I don't remember eating at a really good BBQ place that was anything other than a hole in the wall... More

I expected a red BBQ sauce but the pulled pork came marinated in a vinegar sauce. Really flavorful. Slaw was good. Not heavy with mayo at all. It's takeout only. A little stand by the side of the road.

Allen & Son is always rated best and gets raves, it's good, but maybe not best when compared with other BBQ places. In NC, BBQ is always debated and critiqued. Being from eastern NC, I like the vinegar based BBQ and love the stew. However, the hushpuppies are over fried and sweet. Great sweet tea because it is not very... More
