history and super barbeque

Over too many years to count we have gone to Allen and Son for North Carolina barbecue. We only do take out and always have some pork barbecue in our freezer. When we visit our children out of state we always bring Allen and Son barbecue. We have eaten in the casual restaurant only once. Our... read more

Barbecue was delicious, sauce is vinegar and red peppers and that is all. As it should be! Service is fast and friendly. Hushpuppies are melt in your mouth good!

Visit BBQ places everywhere we visit and we agree this is the best BBQ we've tasted. Ribs were meaty, the sauce spicey, the potato salad was mustard based and the slaw was good. The chopped pork was not fatty and smokey. What more can you want. And they have home made vanilla ice cream to finish everything off.

We have NEVER written a review of a restaurant before but felt compelled to review this place after spending $60 here last night. We feel bad, but don't want anyone else to go based on the good reviews.... We have been looking for good NC BBQ for years and we're excited to try this place, based on the good reviews.... More

Most states have their own styles of slow cooked meat, including pork, beef, and chicken. North Carolina is known for it's three types of Pork BBQ, which is always cooked on an outdoor cooker using native hickory or oak coals and only reluctantly charcol or gas. Although some will argue that the Eastern, Piedmont, or Western varietys are superior for... More

I generally get a bbq sandwich with slaw to go, and one of these is really more than I can eat. The pork is excellent, the slaw tasty, and the hushpuppies are pretty darn good while they are still hot. On the rare occasion that I've ordered fries, I've been disappointed because I like my fries on the crispy, rather... More

Barbecue was really flavorful, great coleslaw and other sides. Server was friendly and relaxed; made us fee welcome. I ordered the half chicken -- but it was more like 1/4 chicken. Decor had the old time charm, but it could use some updating -- new and clean tablecloths would be a start. Definitely good, but could be so much better,... More

If ya like NC style BBQ then a sammich from Allen and son in Chapel Hill will send you home happy. It's not fancy it's just tasty. That's enough for me to come back when I'm in town.

We were attending a wedding in Chapel Hill and had some time prior to the evening event. As former Houstonians we love to try BBQ from different regions whenever we can. Allen & Son was recommended by a local and we decided to give it a try for lunch. All I can say is that I wish I had read... More

I am completing a 24 hour day trip to Chapel Hill, and I am writing this review before I even leave. That should tell you something! So, I went to an information session at UNC, and the host said, "Oh, by the way, if anyone is into BBQ…let me know." So after the session when everyone was asking pointed questions... More
