I am completing a 24 hour day trip to Chapel Hill, and I am writing this review before I even leave. That should tell you something! So, I went to an information session at UNC, and the host said, "Oh, by the way, if anyone is into BBQ…let me know." So after the session when everyone was asking pointed questions... More

We had family visiting this weekend and decided to pick up some pulled pork barbecue and sauce. I've been to Allen and Son a number of times over the years but I have never taken time to review their barbecue. In this case, I just picked up the pulled pork and sauce as a take-out order. I usually opt for... More

Any time I am in North Carolina, I make an extreme effort to get to Allen and Son BBQ - even when I have to drive an hour (or more) to do so. The restaurant itself isn't anything to brag about...plastic table clothes on the table (not always as clean as one might like), silverware wrapped in somewhat flimsy paper... More

I was in North Carolina to visit a friend. I really wanted some great Carolina BBQ and this place was recommended to her by a friend. It looks just like a BBQ joint should look. I ordered the BBQ plate. Two things you should know about me: I'm from Alabama (born, raised, still here) and I love vinegar. I understand... More

Loved everything from the hushpuppies to pecan pie. Stopped here after passing it many times and so glad we did. Will definitely return.

I stopped going to Allen & Son BBQ (on old 86) a few years ago once Hillsborough BBQ opened up. I drove by today and decided to try them again. I got 2 lbs of ribs. They were HORRIBLE....large ribs (not baby back) fatty, swimming in grease. I threw most of them out. Don't waste your time, Hillsborough BBQ is... More

I went to UNC in the late 80s and Allen & Sons was my go to NC barbecue place. I was there last weekend and it is still great. I don't live in NC anymore so I can't comment on whether it is the best in the state but it is really good.

If you like Eastern Carolina style vinegar based que, this is the place to go. Actually 2 places, one on either end of Chapel Hill. One is owned by the father and the other by his son. I prefer the one on the North end of town. Nothing fancy about these places (think paper plates and checkered table coths in... More

Expect the best barbecued pork you will ever have. Sides, not so much. Unfair to compare this to other restaurants. It's a barbecue joint not a restaurant. Very pleasant servers.
