Enjoyed a great lunch at this Chapel Hill institution, known for its NC barbecue. Great hush puppies. Can't speak for the cole slaw because I don't like it, but my friend took mine and ate hers plus mine, so it must be good. Also enjoyed the homemade peach cobbler, warmed, for dessert. I always like to try different barbecue restaurants... More

My addiction to pulled pork BBQ began in the late 1970s when I taught at UNC and made regular trips to Allen And Son. I went back this week on a trip to Duke and found to my delight that the BBQ is just as delicious as I remember it 35 years ago. It's not really pulled pork, but incredibly... More

My husband and I had talked about stopping here for several years as we passed through the area and based on some of the reviews we decided to stop for lunch today. We had high hopes and were expecting a good meal. I ordered the bbq plate with French fries and my husband had the plate with potato salad. The... More

I had dinner here with my daughter and her two small children. She and I both ordered the barbecue platter, which was huge as well as delicious - we both took a lot of it home. The pork barbecue came with coleslaw and hush puppies. There was a kids menu as well. We also had desserts - unfortunately they were... More

I heard great reports on this restaurant. My grandson & I had lunch....ordered the same barbecue, plate with slaw & hush puppies. N.C. barbecue has a vinegar base..not a tomato base. The iced tea was excellent...an extra pitcher. Service was very good. A warm jar of hot sauce was brought to the table. Very good but use sparingly If you like... More

Barbecue is fantastic! The potato salad and cole slaw are perfectly prepared in a vinegar base and it's not too sweet which I much prefer over the sugary versions I've tried elsewhere. Fast, fresh, and filling. And the hush puppies....ohhhhh myyyyyy! Can't be beat!

I am a local and have driven past this place for 30 years and never stopped in until today. I ordered a bbq sandwich with fries and hushpuppies. The vinegar based barbeque is okay, not too fatty. The fries are cut in-house and would have been good had they drained a little more grease off of them. The hushpuppies were... More

Great small family bbq ambiance and authentic NC. However, there are plenty of other bbq places which have a better overall bbq (q shack, Smokey's). Good service and we got some good homemade pie to go.

Placed a catering order for a year end event for adults and was pleased with the food and service. The order placed over the phone was correct, the packaging of the food appropriate and ready for service at the event. The guests asked where the barbecue was purchased and agreed it was excellent. Site also has a dining room but... More

This is one of the many bbq restaurants on the historic barbecue trail. On this trip I tried 7 of the 25 listed restaurants. Of them all Allen & Son was far away the best. Just the right smoke and texture (medium chopped).
