Really nice southern food

Portion size was huge, you must come hungry! the only pity was there are no swaps in the menu - so we were left with some food we didn't touch. The food was really comforting and the key lime cake was really good (a bit dense but the taste was divine). You should defiantly try the pulled pork and... read more

Absolutely the worst BBQ I have ever had in my 60 years. The pork was over salted, and old tasting, with a bad after taste. The hushpuppies were over cooked, the slaw was so so. My tea glass tasted like it may not have been rinsed well, it had a soapy taste. The Staff was polite, but did not ask... More

This place provides the quintessential North Carolina bbq experience. I've never had pulled pork in its league. and that vinegar-based hot sauce--wow. pulled pork and slaw on a bun. simple and perfect.

This is simply a good, down home, place for Carolina barbecue. Service was quick & friendly. The food was plentiful, delicious, & reasonably priced. I got the barbecue platter, which came with a side of cole slaw & hush puppies. Even though I was full from the meal, I felt that I had to try a dessert...for ratings purposes, of... More

The food is cooked right there, and the barbecue and fries are very good. The inside eating area is not very desirable so I recommed take-out.

Driven by it for years and finally stopped in - it is a classic old NC "Q" spot and I really liked the charm of that authentic country charm. However, our waitress was not too charming. She got the job done but was surly and harried. Maybe she was not having a good day, but I suspect that is just... More

While traveling through we wanted to stop for Carolina BBQ and stopped at this great local joint. The service was super and the food came quick. We went at 3 in the afternoon and the place was pretty steady the whole time and they also had several take-out orders. They only had one sauce to add and it was pretty... More

If you are looking for fancy, white table cloth dining, this is not your place. However, if you are looking for the best barbecue, Brunswick stew, cole slaw, and hush puppies, you have stepped into heaven. Allen and Son is an institution in this area and they deserve all the accolades they get. The food is simply the best Southern... More

I stopped by Allen & Son recently after avoiding it for several years. Unfortunately, besides still being overpriced and customer unfriendly (they can't be bothered to offer unsweet tea), this time the barbecue tasted like it had been reheated from the day before. The slaw was good and the potato salad ok. BTW, this is not eastern NC style or... More

It has been several years that I have been to Allen and Sons in Chapel Hill so why am I writing now? I'm looking for different styles of BBQ sauces and I remember that Allen and Sons were highly rated as a restaurant so I'm assuming they would have a good sauce. When I was there I don't remember even... More
