Superb Indian Cuisine

We ate here on Christmas Day, 2014. This narrow, rectangular restaurant on Chapel Hill's main drag, Franklin Street, is one of the best Indian restaurants I have ever experienced. They say they are "focused on delivering the South Indian culinary experience in a world class style" and we think... read more

They say they are "focused on delivering the South Indian culinary experience in a world class style" and we think they deliver on that. The name Cholanad is derived from the... More

We had a wonderful late lunch after Saturday's UNC-GT game ('heels!) and enjoyed every morsel. We ordered that samosa app which is just amazing with these tiny little jewel-like samosas on top of a delicious melange of beans, cilantro, toasted coconut, etc. We then enjoyed shrimp-mango dosa, chicken sag with wonderful garlic naan, and a fish curry. Every sauce was... More

Cholanad was a pleasant surprise on a cold winter evening. We had several of the specialties of the house - medieval rice balls, the dhosa, the thali. We were very pleased with the variety and the uniqueness of the food. Our waiter used an ipod to take our orders and wirelessly send them to the bar and the kitchen. They... More

I give 2 stars just because the ambience was good, the waitress was very polite, professional and good. Now getting into the cuisine: We ordered paneer tikka, chicken 65 for appetizers. Both of them were good. They were served with tomato rice. These were pretty good raising our expectation. For the main course we ordered "whole fish on banana leaf, kothu... More

ALWAYS go there for Tiger on Diet. Sumptuous, delicious Dosa that comes in a great size with flavorful, finger-lick-worthy chutneys. The ambience is great and parking is convenient. Must Go.

We don't get here often but this time the chef was off Hubby had a fish curry - good but not great. I had a mediocre curry dosa - not light but chewy with almost non-existent filling. The mini-samosa appetizer was up to standard as well as the pistachio kulfi and veg thali but it was a disappointing visit this... More

My eggplant dish was wonderful, as were the 3 different kinds of bread. Also the fried lentil appetizer was tasty. The service however was abysmal. I can excuse the waitress fumbling with the electronic ordering device, and maybe her other issues were also because she was new? She didn't refill waters or take additional drink orders. She was just not... More

This is more of an upscale Indian restaurant in Chapel Hill. The food tastes very authentic and well made. Its good for lunch or dinner. Mutton Biriyani and the dosas are real good here.

We just enjoyed three splendidly different scrumptious meals at Cholanad. I don't care for really spicy food and I enjoyed the new tastes of a DOSA,thin "pancakes" made out of green lentils stuff with mango and homemade cheese as well as onions and spice. My daughter had the star of the dinner the cauliflower fried and then roasted or baked.... More

The restaurant has an excellent ambience and one of their Chefs Subhaash is very friendly. He takes a lot of effort to explain the dish which is artistically served on your table. The food is very authentic and just unbeatable in quality. Their dinner portions are very generous (for the cost you pay). I have had their Paneer Tikka Masala,... More
