We were in the Chapel Hill/Carrboro area with some friends for a Tae Kwon Do tournament for our children. After they had competed we decided to to and have some lunch. After some discussion we decided to go to downtown Carrboro for lunch and settled on Southern Rail for its cool atmosphere being in old train cars which our kids... More

We missed lunch while moving our son into his dorm, so stopped into Southern Rail for a late lunch/early dinner. We were offered our choice of indoor dining in one of the converted rail cars or outdoors on one of two terraces. The decor is quirky and somewhat cluttered but fits right into the Carrboro/UNC vibe. Our seating on the... More

Diverse Menu (with vegetarian options). We had a group of 6 that were seated promptly and comfortably. Food was tasty and reasonably priced. Full bar- that we utilized fully! Although a majority of the positive experience was the private function after dinner we attended, the restaurant was kind enough to put up with us and provide good service til the... More

First off, Southern Rail has a very cool, unique setting as a converted series of train cars. They also have a nice outdoor space in the rear (and front, but that is right next to a pretty busy parking lot). Good selection of beers on tap and by the bottle. The service can be spotty at times -- either very... More

This was my second trip to Southern Rail and both trips have been very pleasurable. I love their fried chicken, in any form. I usually end up stealing a chicken strip from my 3 year olds plate. The restaraunt has a laid back feel and possibly over exuberant wait staff (Sterling that means you). Overall I definitely recommend.

My girlfriend and I stopped in because it had a nice little patio area. We both had the Little Christy, which was a veggie sandwich with basil pesto that we added grilled chicken too! And when I say grilled chicken, it had the grill marks. Oh my, the flavor was awesome and they toasted the sourdough, the sweet tater fries... More

On a recent Saturday visit to the area, we chose Southern Rail to have lunch. We didn't realize they only offered brunch on Saturdays and since we had an an early breakfast, brunch was not what we wanted -- so I'll take the blame for not realizing it was a brunch menu. But....my son-in-law wanted a beer -- they were... More

First warm day of Spring and came for lunch on their patio. Recommend their BBQ sandwich with tater tots. Lots of beer on tap to select from.

Carrboro is a cool little town, and the Southern Rail initially appears to have great promise to fit in as a cool place to eat and drink, having the converted rail cars and all. The 4 of us had been eager to try it out, but we wished we'd had lower expectations. The service was very bland, a low interest... More

Do not go. For weeks I had wanted to try out this intriguing restaurant built from two railway train cars. Today I had the opportunity to try it out with my daughter and husband. I had the fried chicken BLT, my daughter had the caesar salad, my husband had the benson burger. No one left happy. The fried chicken was... More
