Good, but food seemed "chain-like"

I haven't been here in years - my salmon salad was fine, but it wasn't anything special. Felt I could have gotten the same thing at one of the chain restaurants. I will return and try something different. Pleasant wait staff.

We have eaten at The Red Onion for at least 20 years and last December I even wrote a good review about it. Over the past two months, however, the meals have not been up to their normal standard taste-wise or portion-wise. We ate there several times recently and have now decided not to return for some time....it is just... More

We ate at this restaurant for an evening meal. The food was fine but the service was terrible. It took about 15 minutes for anyone to come to the table to even ask us about our drinks. We then waited for them to take our order. It took forever for the food to be served. We saw our waitress twice,... More

We stopped here on the recommendation of a friend. Not entirely my style of restaurant, but my wife and daughter liked it. The onion rings (appetizer) were excellent. There was plenty of food on the plate and the prices were reasonable.

We met our daughter here for a late lunch, and had excellent service and wonderful food. The salads were beyond perfect! Our service was prompt, very courteous, and quite thoughtful. The only drawback is that it's a little noisy....

First, for dessert lovers....for 20 years I have felt that the Red Onion's Peanut Butter Pie is one of the absolute best desserts anywhere (real peanut butter cups in chocolate ice cream with fudge, oreo crust and whipped cream...truly delicious!)! Their homemade banana cream pie is great too. The restaurant offers a good variety and range of meal choices (and... More

The past several times I've been here its always been consistently good food and service. I'm no culinary expert but their food is very tasty and decent serving sizes. I definitely recommend this place for your eating pleasure near the Appalachian State campus.

The Red Onion is a small cafe across from Appalachian State campus. The food was excellent and at a very reasonable price, which is difficult to find in Boone. Very attentive service also. I think our group of 10 ladies surprised them at first, but the quickly went to work putting tables together. Maybe more of a small group or... More

Luckily we were in Boone during Fall break, so the students were not around (as I read here this is a big student hangout) but it was still pretty busy. The food was good but not great. I had the spinach and artichoke quesadilla, and it was spicy as advertised. Unfortunately I never got my side of tortilla chips and... More

On Highway 321 just across from the Appalachian State campus, the Red Onion is a good place to catch the campus buzz. But more locals than students appreciate the good salads, French onion soup, BLTs, reubens, and pizzas (ten inches), good enough for two light lunchers. Service is good, parking is ample, and the prices run in the low teens... More
