Proper is a Southern bistro-style restaurant located in downtown Boone NC. We offer carefully prepared fresh food in a comfortable and relaxed setting. Most everything we serve is made from scratch, in-house, and what we do not make ourselves is all natural and preservative free. All of our desserts are made in-house as well. Our best sellers are fried chicken, collard greens, and mac 'n' cheese, and chocolate pecan pie, but we have much more to offer. Come see us and find out for yourself.

Classic Southern fare

Nothing fancy, but solid Southern food. From crispy catfish to braised short ribs, you'll find something you like. Great collard greens, & if you get a salad, try the fig/sage or lemon/thyme dressings. Unique & delicious.

It's been a year since my family had visited Proper in downtown Boone... and once again, we hit it up for Sunday brunch. THIS time I got something new that I've never had (nor heard of) before... a Chicken & Waffle with wild mushroom gravy! Others in my party got entrees like: Baked Grits (with Sweet, Sweet Bacon), Meat &... More

Ordered Meatloaf, Mash Potatoes and gravy, collard greens and biscuit..Collard greens lived up to the hype for it is mention on here that the collards are to die for..they are the best I have had anywhere, better than Grandma's. Meatloaf was a hit served with homemade ketchup. Will defiantly go back, I believe Proper has replaced Daniel Boone's as the place... More

We had no idea what to expect its a very small restaurant. We were in the mood for steak but there were no steaks on the menu. John, the waiter, explain that everything is made fresh. We were thrilled with our meals. The freshest vegetables we've ever had in a restaurant, the fried chicken and stuffed pepper were wonderful. We... More

My husband and I are house sitting for a few days in Boone, NC. The people who own the home recommended that we eat at Proper. We went there for lunch and it was excellent! It is a small restaurant and parking is challenging. We arrived at around 2:00 and were able to be seated immediately. Our waiter was very... More

Two of us went for lunch. I tried the fried chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy and waldorf salad. The chicken breast is TINY (like half a breast) and really dry. The mashed potatoes/gravy and waldorf salad were very good. Cost was $10.00, not including drink.

Quaint little boutique restaurant/Bistro in beautiful Boone, North Carolina. We enjoyed a beautiful brunch which was done to perfection. Each in our the party (four) ordered a different item and each was superb. The shrimp and grits I had has, in my experience, only two rivals: 82-Queen and Poogan's Porch in Charleston. Creamy, tasso laden grits topped with perfectly cooked... More

We have lost count of how many times we've enjoyed this delightful restaurant, to our mind a sort of combination of traditional southern country food with small-plate-European variety. Not fancy, but quite creative. And save room for dessert!

Great little restaurant in what used to be the jail for Boone in the 1800's (so we were told) Excellent lunch of fried catfish and delicious mac and cheese. The only thing I wish was different was it was cold the day we were there, and the fireplace wasn't on. Plus all of the tables (I think) and certainly the... More

I'm from Oregon, and know very little about Southern food, so that's why we stopped here. I ordered fried catfish,(we throw them back if we catch them) collard greens,(not a fan) corn muffin, succotash (had to ask what was succotash!) and hush puppies.. (or johnny cakes, cant remember but I had to ask what they were too) I also picked... More
