Satisfying Southern comfort food

Proper, located in an old house near the Appalachian State University campus, serves delicious, locally sourced Southern food in several rooms and on the porch. Most lunch plates ($12) come with a choice of two sides and cornbread or a biscuit. Four of us tried a variety of items: tender fried... read more

Tried lunch here as a recommendation from someone who lived in Boone. The restaurant was dark and uninviting. We were disappointed in the unusual menu as well. Very expensive. Check it out before you go.

I like the Shrimp & Grits but if you don't get in a line the inconsiderate folks will jump in front of you.......to get in the door.....

There are not words to descibe the dining experience @ The Proper. It is beautifully decorated, so from the moment you arrive you will see you are in a special place. Three of us girls went there for dinner on a Monday night, they were busy, but tentively seated us. The dinner menu is straight forward listing the options for... More

I was introduced to this quaint and interesting restaurant by a friend. The location is actually the old jail and is very interesting. This is definitely a farm-to-table restaurant and the food was exceptionally good. I was really surprised at how reasonable lunch was and understand dinner is equally fine. I will definitely be going back for dinner soon.

First visit to Proper. In a historic building that has been a home, a jail house and numerous restaurants. This restaurant has been around since 2010 for a good reason. Menu not posted because changes daily. I had fried catfish with collards, Mac and cheese with corn bread. Everyone's meal delicious. Reasonable priced with all dinners 12.50 on menu. Specials a... Restaurant came highly recommended. Really neat old building, but that's all. Southern fried chicken was small portion; half breast cut in half. very dry and greens were below average. Thought we would give it another chance by ordering dessert. Mistake, had peach cobbler which was served cold just out of the cooler; congealed and the only place that served it... More

We had seen an ad for Proper in a Visitors magazine. It made the restaurant sound as if it were good southern food like your mother makes. That was far from the truth. The mac and cheese would have been much better if it came out of a Kraft box. I am not sure what it was that they were... More

We have eaten here several times when visiting our son at ASU. This is a great place for brunch or dinner. Awesome collards! Down home southern style comfort food.

Great comfort food like from Grandma's kitchen. I highly recommend the collards as one of your sides. The temperature of the entree could be served a bit hotter. Interesting space as this historic building was the old jail. Outside seating available. Great service.
