Just changed owners the week we were there, they had only been open for 5 days... The barbecue was wonderful, with your choice of sauces - everything from chipotle to tomato based to mustard based. Tried all of them and still couldn't decide which was best!!! Barbecue was moist and flavorful by itself - the sauce just put it over... More

I recently tried out Smokey's for the first time after a weekend of skiing with a group of friends. We all venture to Banner Elk frequently and have eaten at this restaurant in the past when it was not Smokey's. I have to say that this time the food was FAR BETTER than I remember when it was Frontier. We... More

Great food with nice service. No frills but all homemade. Keeping it simple but simple is good when it is done right. You can't beat the price either.

My family and I ate there this weekend and MAN! was that some good food! I spoke to the manager about a few of the reviews I read prior to going to eat about the location being out of food. He replied in a nice way " We sometimes run out because we cook everything fresh and it take 12-14... More

We have eaten at all three versions of this restaurant (Pappys Frontier and Smokey's). Although the food was good, there were a few issues. My wife and I ordered the brisket sandwich. She had mac and cheese and collards. The collards were really good but the mac and cheese was lack luster. It tasted like elbow noodles with basic foodservice... More

We ate there in January 2014 the sign out front still said Frontier, but all the things inside said Smokey, so must have changed hands. The food was very good, good portions, we tried the pork and brisket at our table and everyone like what they got.

I dropped by because our family was hungry for BBQ; absolutely the best pulled pork I have ever had. Kids didn't like the mac n cheese though because they said it was spicy, but the baked beans and southern cole slaw were awesome!

We have been to this restaurant 2 other times in the past and enjoyed our dinner even though we noticed several negative reviews. We went last evening as we were in the mood for Ribs. WHAT AN EXPERIENCE! I think we were lucky the last two times...because we could not believe the attitude of the staff. First, once you go... More

We ate here tonight, it was alright. I enjoyed it being the restaurant before, that's for sure. My husband ordered their bbq pork sandwich and he liked it. My blackend chicken sandwich was Cajun style, not bbq blackened like I thought. I ordered their corn because the menu and the waitress stated it was fresh corn. When I got it,... More

A snowy drive found us in Banner Elk at lunchtime, and we had heard the brisket was worthwhile, so we hit the Frontier. A nice, clean, well-laid out facility with sturdy wooden tables and a couple of large flat screens give the place a good atmosphere, although must admit this is the firs southern BBQ joint that I've been to...
