This is a college town(Appalachian State), so tons of pub/restaurant places in the area, all serving the same, basic fare. Unfortunately, the staff here did or does not attend schools here, given their blasé, uninterested approach to this industry. Our drinks came out wrong-twice, the food orders were likewise drastically confused, the food quality was average, with small portions. The... More

It's always a good sign when a restaurant is full, and the Painted Fish is clearly popular with locals and visitors alike. The menu features mostly local foods, imaginatively prepared. The sauces were good across the board. Fresh fish is a good bet. Good craft beers too, though not a great variety of styles. Clearly one of the best dinner... More

Took forever to get a seat and not even half full at 1:00 pm. 10 minutes to be asked a drink. Forever to order and even longer to get. Will never get that time back.

Food was very good. This seems like an upscale place, but after traveling most of the day no one seemed to care.

Had lunch today with three other people. I had a delightful tuna patty burger made with fresh tuna, probably fairly priced at $10. Unfortunately, the other three members of the party, who all had the $10 fried chicken salad were VERY disappointed with their choice. It consisted of a small (about 4oz.) of lightly battered fried chicken on which was... More

We ate dinner last night, outside, looking at Sugar Mountain. A previous experience at this restaurant left me leery when I was served pork bellies which made me gag. But, last night I had a delicious vegetarian pasta dish followed by blueberry bread pudding. I have done a 180* turnaround on this restaurant and will once again recommend it enthusiastically.... Tuesdays are good, especially if you are eating a pre theater dinner. Lots of other diners had the same idea but our reservation for 7 diners was promptly honored, our service was excellent, and our food was delicious. The fried fish was feather light. My order of fried oysters was backed with a delightful salad to which I added...what else?...more... More

I have eaten at the Painted Fish on numerous occasions, but will no longer return. The food is pretty good, and the service variable, but once you have finished your meal good luck at getting your ticket and getting out of there. Since I imagined that our incredibly long wait for the ticket was a one-time thing, I returned the... More

The Painted Fish is a very good restaurant with a lot of good Southern staples on the menu..Friend Chicken, Trout, gourmet Hamburgers, etc. They didn't have a huge selection of beer and wine but what we had was good. The Collards are amazing. We had the chocolate torte which was fantastic. All in all a good meal! The service was... More

After my first time eating here and having pretty bad service but an ok meal, I decided I'd give it one more shot. I ordered a burger (well done!). The burger was very pink inside and blood/juice was dripping out of it. I asked that it be cooked longer and placed on a fresh bun as mine was now soaked,... More
