Favorite place in Western NC for ahi tuna! Nice patio , great when weather is warm enough to enjoy. They had great short ribs, but when we visited in September they had taken them off the menu

"The Fish" is usually packed at dinner... and for good reason. The food is excellent and the menu is packed with unusual choices like "mac 'n shrimp." A huge burger has an amazing array of available toppings - even a fried egg. The menu isn't huge, but the variety is admirable. A separate dessert menu has unusual - and delicious... More

I had the bacon chicken which had a lot of flavor. I also had the key lime pie, which was more like a cheesecake with a chocolate crust. It tasted okay but not what I expect from a key lime pie. The waitress was very pleasant and attentive. Not the best place I have ever eaten but I would go... More

The most memorable desserts of all that we have had during our trip. We had the s'more and the bread pudding used in a cinnamon roll. Both were exquisite. We also had the cheese grits and pork chop with red eye gravy. That were not as memorable but they are good.

We have been to The Painted Fish a few times, and while it is ok, I believe there are better restaurants in the area. Our last visit was with friends, and they ordered hamburgers. Their food was delivered with no ketchup either on the plate or on any of the tables. After asking the waitress for ketchup and waiting for... More

This is a college town(Appalachian State), so tons of pub/restaurant places in the area, all serving the same, basic fare. Unfortunately, the staff here did or does not attend schools here, given their blasé, uninterested approach to this industry. Our drinks came out wrong-twice, the food orders were likewise drastically confused, the food quality was average, with small portions. The... More

It's always a good sign when a restaurant is full, and the Painted Fish is clearly popular with locals and visitors alike. The menu features mostly local foods, imaginatively prepared. The sauces were good across the board. Fresh fish is a good bet. Good craft beers too, though not a great variety of styles. Clearly one of the best dinner... More

Took forever to get a seat and not even half full at 1:00 pm. 10 minutes to be asked a drink. Forever to order and even longer to get. Will never get that time back.

Food was very good. This seems like an upscale place, but after traveling most of the day no one seemed to care.

Had lunch today with three other people. I had a delightful tuna patty burger made with fresh tuna, probably fairly priced at $10. Unfortunately, the other three members of the party, who all had the $10 fried chicken salad were VERY disappointed with their choice. It consisted of a small (about 4oz.) of lightly battered fried chicken on which was... More
