Dined here for brunch on a Sunday and it was a mixed bag. Décor/ambiance nondescript. No one at hostess stand for awhile. Had reservations for Sunday brunch...seated...great waitress Briesa. I had a High Country benedict that was average tasting, nothing special, girlfriend had a wonderful sunchoke parmesan local soup that was absolutely delicious. She also had the painted fish salad... Excellent service ... although if you make a reservation, ask for a booth just for better seating. We had local NC trout that was cooked perfectly (not dry, not salty, and spiced just right). I had the collards which had a dash too much vinegar but since I'm not a local, what do I know? Also enjoyed sticky bun bread... More

We were amazed with their fried oyster appetizer, the best I've ever had. Tried their special that night "Hawaiian Walu" which was outstanding. My husband got the Cavatelli shrimp casserole which was loaded with shrimp and loved the cream sauce. They totally have a creative chef who knows how to prepare and present his delicious inspirations.

We were 'leaf peeping' in the North Carolina mountains and this year's fall colors were spectacular. We had not been there in years and forgot how beautiful the High Country is. While out we decided to warm up and stop for lunch in Banner Elk at a little cafe that we had eaten at in the past. We were disappointed... More

We came in 5 minutes til close which can usually irritate the servers and the kitchen crew, but our waiter was very warm and friendly and the food we ordered was out in a flash! We ate snails for the first time- they were INSANE good! Even the kids loved them! My husbands lamb was wonderful, my egg topped hamburger... More

The meal started well with a perfectly cooked and surprisingly large fried oysters appetizer. The entrées, however, did not measure up. My curried scallops were slightly overcooked and a bit chewy as a result. My wife’s steak, one of the evening’s “specials,” was a disaster. We will go to almost any lengths to avoid a public fuss so in more... More

We did not have reservations and stopped in The Painted Fish Cafe at around 6:00 during a busy weekend. We felt pretty lucky that we were able to get a table. The service was nice, but the food was absolutely nothing special. No atmosphere "at all". If you are visiting the area looking for a nice dining experience with a... More

Favorite place in Western NC for ahi tuna! Nice patio , great when weather is warm enough to enjoy. They had great short ribs, but when we visited in September they had taken them off the menu

"The Fish" is usually packed at dinner... and for good reason. The food is excellent and the menu is packed with unusual choices like "mac 'n shrimp." A huge burger has an amazing array of available toppings - even a fried egg. The menu isn't huge, but the variety is admirable. A separate dessert menu has unusual - and delicious... More

I had the bacon chicken which had a lot of flavor. I also had the key lime pie, which was more like a cheesecake with a chocolate crust. It tasted okay but not what I expect from a key lime pie. The waitress was very pleasant and attentive. Not the best place I have ever eaten but I would go... More
