Most amazing meal of our trip!

We decided to go to Emerson Spice for a late lunch. It was Eid so we ate in this outdoor area on the inner sections of the hotel. There was not a super wide variety of food but what they did have was absolutely amazing! Each sauce was specially paired with the entree. I would recommend the shrimp... read more

This is a special place and was no where like I'd visited before. The building has been owned in the past by sultans, the richest man in East Africa amongst others and the interior certainly feels like that, in an entirely non-western way. As soon as you walk into the hotel it's like going back in time (in a good... More

Dear Julian, Wow! What a fantastic and well informed review. You certainly did your homework! Emerson Spice was indeed built by a very successful Spice Merchant back in the late 1800's and we're so pleased you were transported back in time 'in a good way'! And that you enjoyed Emerson's uniquely flamboyant style! Our Zanzibari Team are always happy to... More

If you're in Stonetown this is great spot for sunset drinks and dinner. The hotel itself is beautiful and very "classic Stonetown," with winding steps to lead you to a rooftop bar and dining space that overlooks the entire area. Great service, nice vibe.

Dear Townsend416, Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a great review of The Rooftop Teahouse at Emerson Spice! We're pleased that you enjoyed the views and the Waiters asked me to say a special 'Ahsante Sana Rafiki?' for your praise of their 'great service'. Karibu Tena Zanzibar! With our Best regards, Russell & The Emerson... More

We went for the five course tasting menu. It's a hike up to the roof, but worth it. Beautiful view and since we went for cocktails before we heard the call to prayer all over the city. Every course was delicious and just the right amount of food. They even had someone walk us back to our hotel.

Dear Irandot, What a lovely review. Thank you! We're so glad you made it up the stairs in time for the Sunset and the Calls to Prayer from our 45 Local Mosques. The Chefs asked me to say 'Ahsante Sana' for your kind praise of their Cuisine and we're pleased you took advantage of our Escort back to your hotel.... More

As Emerson Spice is so popular -they have decided to put the 'extras' or those who have not reserved a table , into their 'secret garden'. Of course, no view -it is at present more a building site while they try to put it together. At night, with the candles lit, it is quite pleasant, as you eat under the... More

Dear Pagoda, Thank you so much for writing our first ever review of The Secret Garden, Emerson Spice Hotel's new eatery, in our 'ruined' walled garden. The Open Grill serves Swahili inspired dishes, prepared by the Hotel's Zanzibari Chefs. And, we're glad that you enjoyed the Food, Service , and Dining under the stars! A secluded venue, as the name... More

We went for the five course tasting menu on a Saturday night - it's a set menu which changes daily and is worth booking in advance. The manager is an Englishman who has lived in Zanzibar for eight years and has a keen understanding of the culture and cuisine of the country, and the menu and decor reflect that. The... More

The food was excellent and very well prepared. It's proportioned properly as it should be. Have the Manager or Owner (not sure which title) choose your wine for you as he definitely knows what he is talking about. Do get there before sunset as it is really beautiful and take some photos (please don't bring your tripods - its a... More

I went there for the last lunch during my stay in Zanzibar. Actually, we were disappointed from the Stone Town... because we couldn't fine anything interesting and beautiful by wandering. We came across this place and went upstairs to reach the rooftop cafe. Wow, it is absolutely the nice-view cafe you can see everything in Zanzibar! But, as you know,... More

This was by far the tastiest meal we had in our Tanzania trip (11-day safari ending with 3 nights in Stone Town), high atop the roofs, with a cooling breeze and overlapping calls to prayer.
