Small but good

This is a small coffee shop. Very good vegetarian selections. Friendly staff. Closes early (2:30 PM) on Saturday and closed on Sunday. Great place to go with a friend. Close to ferry and St. George Theater,

Took the Staten Island Ferry to do something a bit different. We got a bit hungry and saw the Gavel Grill with its $8.95 lunch special of a Cubano Sandwich. Sounded good. My wife had the Cubano and while good, was not quite traditional, but satisfying. I had the Chili Burger and was not overflowing with chili which made it... More

Had breakfast there last week with my wife on the way to the ferry. Service was excellent. Eggs, toast, coffee were perfect. Can't speak to the whole menu but it was better than expected.

This is an authentic American Diner with a nice ambience thanks to some retro signs up on the wall and counter- and booth-style seating. The wait staff and chef were all friendly and made helpful recommendations. The food was fresh and full of flavour. I'd certainly recommend a visit to the Gavel Grill. It is easily located just behind the... More

We came across on the Free Staten Island Ferry (see review) and wanted somewhere for lunch before visiting the Murals at Borough Hall which are also a must for any visit as are Free and Great. All of the staff members (& there seemed to be quite a lot) were so friendly, knowledgable about the menu and helpful in our... More

Just a short step from the (free!) Staten Island ferries, and convenient for the nearby Museum and historic St George Theatre this modest eatery has a good menu of well-cooked choices, cheerfully and quickly served. A good place to break the return ferry crossing!

My wife and I just visited NY last week. We rode to the FREE Manhattan-Staten Island ferry and decided to have lunch in Staten Island. Found this place by just wandering around the ferry area. I ordered John's Classic which was roast beef in a bun. I did not expect much but the food was delicious. My wife had the... More

Wandering around Staten Island after a ferry ride, we found this little cafe. The service was excellent, the sandwich terrific and the staff were friendly and informative. A great place to stop in near the Ferry Terminal.

My friend and I took the Manhatten-Staten Island ferry and decided to have lunch at Staten Island. We chose the place where the locals seem to gather. And the locals were not wrong. The Garvel Grill is a place with a nice atmosphere and actually great "everyday" food. I chose an American classic - pancakes with Maple syrup and strawberry.... More

Friendly, attentive staff. Excellent rueben and coffee at a fantastic price. Right behind Borough hall which is straight off the ferry.
