Great Name, Great Food, Great Staff

We came across on the Free Staten Island Ferry (see review) and wanted somewhere for lunch before visiting the Murals at Borough Hall which are also a must for any visit as are Free and Great. All of the staff members (& there seemed to be quite a lot) were so friendly, knowledgable about the... read more

Just a short step from the (free!) Staten Island ferries, and convenient for the nearby Museum and historic St George Theatre this modest eatery has a good menu of well-cooked choices, cheerfully and quickly served. A good place to break the return ferry crossing!

My wife and I just visited NY last week. We rode to the FREE Manhattan-Staten Island ferry and decided to have lunch in Staten Island. Found this place by just wandering around the ferry area. I ordered John's Classic which was roast beef in a bun. I did not expect much but the food was delicious. My wife had the... More

Wandering around Staten Island after a ferry ride, we found this little cafe. The service was excellent, the sandwich terrific and the staff were friendly and informative. A great place to stop in near the Ferry Terminal.

My friend and I took the Manhatten-Staten Island ferry and decided to have lunch at Staten Island. We chose the place where the locals seem to gather. And the locals were not wrong. The Garvel Grill is a place with a nice atmosphere and actually great "everyday" food. I chose an American classic - pancakes with Maple syrup and strawberry.... More

Friendly, attentive staff. Excellent rueben and coffee at a fantastic price. Right behind Borough hall which is straight off the ferry.

The grill has a charming luncheonette vibe and a large menu. Whether its counter service or table service you are looking for, the grill's breakfast and lunch menus will please. The service is fast and hot. I love the chicken salad sandwich. The burgers are good and my friend raves about the cheesesteak. Great for neighborhood businesses and those on... More

We came across on the Staten Island Ferry early having missed breakfast in NY and stumbled across the Gavel Grill. Food was great, service really friendly and it just had a great small town vibe going for it. We all agreed it was the best diner of our trip. So to all of you at the Grill - fantastic well... More
