Great meal and location, though rumors suggest change is afoot

We had a great meal in the quaint but very busy location. The menu was seasonally correct and we enjoyed the duck and salmon. Let the waiter pick what was a decent Pinot noir. Next to the absurdly overpriced and equally overrated Topping Room, this place was spectacular.

A somewhat cosy all American restaurant in a wonderful area. However, I found it very pricy particularly given the bad service. A waiter should really know how to serve wine! When we asked for a recommendation between 2 dishes, we were told that other dishes were better. My black bass was actually not bad, but I understand that the meat... More

Went to Vine Street this evening. Another wonderful meal - mine started with a half dozen sparklingly fresh Montauk Pearl oysters, followed by the Monday night special Bouillabaise, served properly with croûtons and rouille. You won't find better this side of Marseille. Attentive but unobtrusive service was most appreciated. This place is expensive, but the product is so good, it's... More

We booked this restaurant having heard many great things. It was a huge disappointment. The service was poor, the staff did not seem to care in any way. Looking around everyone was feeling the same frustrations with the staff. They dropped off our second $50 bottle of wine and said “it’s a screw top, I will let you open it”... More

We started off at the bar on a quiet Friday evening. Then we moved to a table for 4 by the window. There was a good selection of appetizers, entrees & desserts. Everything was yummy! The chef was very accommodating of my friend who is gluten free- the chef happily replaced a rice side with tasty looking vegetables. The fruit... More

The cocktails are expensive but delicious. The food is pricey but very tasty and well made. I had the mussels and fries. And the spinach/arugula with mushroom side dish. I was very happy with the food and the wine but the average meal is $100 a plate. It's the kind of place you go to once or twice in your... More

Leery of slow service and an over-wrought and noisy room, we walked into Vine Street Cafe on a Friday evening in October to find our fears for naught. The candle-lit restaurant was only half-full but glowing with warm, subdued vitality. Warm bread brought to the table was irresistible. A curried carrot soup delicious. The miso grilled salmon superb and their... More

This type of restaurant can only thrive in an environment with little competition (albeit an environment which is improving overall, see below for some alternatives). You realise this when you walk through the door to be 'greeted' by a hostess who has a slightly hostile and condescending air about her, making you instantly feel unwelcome and realise 'this is not... We were old fans of Vine Street starting years ago during our summers on Shelter Island. The food, ambiance and personal attention from the wait staff and chef always justified to us their Manhattan restaurant-level prices. So when we reserved a table for our family to celebrate our anniversary (noting on our OpenTable reservation that we were celebrating) we had... More
