Truth be told, I only visit Shelter Island one or twice a summer, but Pat and Steve's was always a friendly, low-key option for unsurprising but honest food. The new incarnation, at least based on my recent visit, is not worth a detour. The service was extraordinarily slow, and the place was almost empty. Iced tea took about 10 minutes... More

If you feel slightly ripped off at some of the prices on Shelter Island you'll be pleasantly surprised by The Islander. Really lovely diner serving all the breakfast staples: pancakes, grits, burrito's it's all there. I ate delicious eggs florentine and my partner had the breakfast burrito with a side of bacon. Service with a smile and a check that... More

My husband and I just had ice cream and a shake at the counter, but we found it to be the kind of place we would like to return to the next time we are on Shelter Island. When I enquired about an egg cream, the waitress whipped one up so I could have a taste, no charge. It was... More

We've made the Islander our new Sunday breakfast destination. My boyfriend is partial to the Eggs Benedict (with a well-executed Hollandaise sauce) and I'm a fan of the Corned Beef Hash with scrambled eggs. Yesterday I had a craving for oatmeal and even though it wasn't on the menu the staff served up a bowl in record time. The staff... More

I've been a frequent visitor of the Islander since it was Pat and Steves. It is definately NOT Pat and Steves anymore. The menu has changed. They are definatlely trying to "class" it up. Unfortunately the quality just isn't there. Most of the fish is from frozen, the breads are cheep, and the vegitarian menu is lacking. (if you're a... More

I love the Islander. I've been there twice now and have had a very pleasant experience both times. Both times I've been there for lunch. Lunch prices range from about $5-$15, with sandwiches and salads hovering in the $9 range. The clam chowder and chili are excellent, the wraps are very good, and breakfast is served all day. Our server... More

They serve more but we had breakfast. Nothing special, like a coffee shop. Eggs cooked as requested, Corned Beef Hash good. No credit cards, take cash.

My husband and I had lunch here after 4 hours of hiking at a nearby nature preserve. The atmosphere was nice and even though the place has a local vibe we felt comfortable and welcome, not like outsiders at all. We had the chicken Cobb sandwich, very fresh bread and fresh guacamole on the sandwich and Santa Fe chicken wrap,... More

Lets be honest, people, it is the best deal on the island. The food is consistent and the prices are acceptable. Remember, it is a diner, so adjust your expectations. My favorite part of any visit is chatting with Clarissa. She makes my day. Try the buffalo chicken wrap.

The Islander got off to a slow start but has improved since the new owners took over. The waitstaff is a blend of the staffers from Pat and Steve's (the prior restaurant) and new people, all friendly. Clarissa is a very upbeat waitress with a wonderful sense of humor. I stayed away for a few months after an initial disappointing... More
