I did not have the same experience that most of my fellow travelers have had. While I like the funky atmosphere of Big Cheese, which is directly across the street, the feel of The Alternative Baker was more of a cluttered garage. The young woman that behind the counter was very pleasant. I purchased three pieces of pastry; an oatmeal... More

Thanks for taking the time to give your opinion. Of course, one's tastes are one's own and are not subject to argument, but there are a few corrections i must make to your statements. We do not make a chocolate oatmeal raisin cookie,. We make chocolate crunch cookies and oatmeal raisin cookies, among others. Both all butter cookies have won... More

We tried the lemon cake that seems to be one if their claim fi fame items. It was moist and lemony but turned out not to be my favorite Item. Don't get me wrong, this was quality lemon cake - I was just blown away by the thin buttery delicious crunchy chocolate chip cookie. The carrot cake cupcake was wonderful... More

We were planning a college graduation party for my daughter, who is vegan. She very much wanted a cake for the party...but, a vegan cake. So, the hunt began for a bakery that offered vegan options. I found the website for The Alternative Baker and liked very much what I read. So, off we went to meet with the owner... More

Visited here for the first time today after a very long drive. Had a terrific focaccia lunch and pleasant visit with the owner, who takes justifiable pride in his creations. Check it out!

My husband is very choosy about hot chocolate. It's not unusual for him to find what he orders not chocolatey enough, not hot enough or too sweet. He won't order hot chocolate if it's made from a mix. I'm a bit easier to please when it comes to hot chocolate. He had only wonderful things to say about this hot... More

Sweet, adorable little place full of friendly people and good food. I had perhaps the best egg sandwich I've ever had (and I live in NYC), and met plenty of great people. Clearly the locals love this place - everyone was popping in to grab pastries and coffee or to sit and have breakfast. It's a bakery like no other... More

This baker is the friendliest I've ever met, his baked good and drinks are great and I saw the most amazing chocolate birthday cake. Stop by for a snack or lunch and you will not be disappointed by the food or the service.

Extremely excellent bread, soup, sandwiches, even the coffee is better than most places! Essell is a great guy, fun and interesting to talk with, so friendly. He remembers all of his customers by name, with details about their lives, even if they are only an occasional customer such as myself. There are a number of places to get a quick... More

Every time we go to New Paltz, we make sure to go this bakery lunch place. They have the best Mulled Cider EVER. Incredible cookies. Fantastic goat cheese sandwich on fresh baked breads. The owner lives and breathes his craft. He is a master. Its in a perfect little town with other shops, a b & b, an old movie... More

We absolutely fell in love with this baker. Reading up on him a bit from the articles on the bakery wall, you learn he's a highly trained chef who prides himself on fresh ingredients and handmade traditions. He ships his lemon bundt cakes all over the place. But the egg sandwiches on foccacia are transcendental. I'm not kidding. Ok so... More
