I grew up with very picky Japanese parents who would complain if the rice wasn't right consistency. I feel confident that my parents would love this place. The surroundings are very unassuming, and the place is small, but the service was pleasant. The menu had a lot of good choices, and then when we got our food (very quickly!), it... More

Shiki has the very best Japanese food in Rochester. Their sushi always tastes fresh, other items on the menu offer possibilities not found elsewhere in town, The atmosphere is simple, even spartan, but once the food arrives, you won't care about the surrroundings.

My last review had the "waiting too long for food" Shiki experience. I went there again for a late lunch with friends and I had some amazing Udon, sushi appetizer and mochi. I have heard from several people that Shiki has the most authentic Japanese food when you move off the sushi menu, and judging from the excellent Udon dish,... More

Rochester is NOT exactly the sushi capital of upstate New York. At one time, or actually at 2 separate times, Rochester had good chefs. In 1987 The Tokyo had a very good chef who came here by way of Cincinnati (actually I knew him there) and in 1997 The Plum Garden had a very good chef. They both left shortly... More

This is my choice for a sushi restaurant in Rochester. It is small with not much decor. But I always enjoy the sushi and saki. Never had an issue with the service. Get hot towels to freshen hands initially. Drinks and food come just fine. Wait service is always friendly and efficient. Recommend.

You had to ask for EVERYTHING twice. The tea, the fork, the napkin. We waited for 15 minutes before even getting our water while the place was not even half full. Will not go back again.

We thought the line out front meant it would be great sushi. When our turn came, we decided to sit at the bar and order directly from the chef. He was too busy to take orders and there was only one person handling the entire restaurant. When the food did come, it was not worth the wait, we could have... More

I eat a lot of sushi, I have a pretty good nose for fresh fish. I went here on a date, knowing that the decor was not going to be great but on the suggestion by others that the fish was fantastic. Unfortunately not only was the service poor and a bit rude, the tuna was NOT FRESH and was... More

Shiki is the best most authentic sishi joint in rochester. It is Japanese run. The fish is always super fresh and impeccably prepared. I am a nigiri fan and people into maki featuring kfc chicken or ketchup will be less impressed with this place. Their menu is traditional and their rotating menu features many delicacies hard to find in Rochester... More
